Our new series Dr. Wright's Kitchen Table Math is a step-by-step guide to how you can help your child develop good math skills and do well in school. It also includes activities and games so that you and your child can have fun while exploring these early stages of your child's mathematical journey.

Book 1 of Kitchen Table Math is for parents of children ages 2-8. Other books in the series (available in 2008) will be for parents of older children, and will include workbooks.

Elementary-age children (not yet ready for algebra)

For students not yet ready for algebra, we recommend books from Math Olympiads in the Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS). These books are not meant to replace traditional math textbooks, but rather are intended to be an additional resource to help your child to learn beginning problem-solving and to think about mathematics creatively and more deeply than a routine curriculum.

We recommend the Art of Problem Solving's Introduction to Algebra textbook. This is the first book in our Introduction Series, which forms a complete curriculum for students in middle and early high school.

Some algebra experience

Students with some algebra background are ready for our discrete math textbooks: Introduction to Counting & Probability and/or Introduction to Number Theory. It is not necessarily to have mastered Introduction to Algebra in order to use either of these books. These two books can be read one after the other, in either order, or can be worked through simultaneously.

The discrete math topics covered in Introduction to Counting & Probability and Introduction to Number Theory are becoming increasingly important in a wide variety of scientific and technical careers, but unfortunately are still significantly underrepresented in most middle and high school math curricula. These topics are also highly represented in competitions such as MATHCOUNTS, the AMC contests, and ARML. In our experience, students who learn this material in middle or high school have a much easier time in later college-level coursework than students who see this material in college for the first time.

Students who have not completely mastered Algebra I may also want to work through the second half of Introduction to Algebra. Please refer to the book's post-test to see if your child has mastered the book's contents; if he or she can solve most or all of the problems on the post-test, then this book should not be necessary and would mainly serve as review.

Completed Algebra I (or equivalent)

First, make sure that your child has indeed mastered the contents of our Introduction to Algebra by having him or her take the book's post-test. If he or she does not successfully complete significant portions of the post-test, then see our recommendations for students with some algebra.

Typically, students will study Geometry after completing Algebra I, using our Introduction to Geometry textbook. However, students with little or no experience in discrete math topics such as counting, probability, or number theory are strongly recommended to continue with our Introduction to Counting & Probability and/or Introduction to Number Theory books, either before proceeding to Geometry or simultaneously with the Geometry book.

Advanced students

We first recommend that the student master our Introduction Series. You can check your student's level of mastery of these books by having him or her take the books' post-tests:

If your student has mastered our Introduction Series, then he or she can continue with our Intermediate Series. The books in the Intermediate Series can be worked through in any order, although most students will prefer to begin with Intermediate Algebra (available in early 2008), as it is equivalent to a standard Algebra 2 course with a greater emphasis on problem solving.

Alternatively, advanced students may wish to learn more advanced problem-solving techniques by working through Volume 2 of our classic problem solving series.
