From students
"I absolutely loved this class! I will be taking another class this summer for the AMC10. I have now taken Intro to Number Theory and Intro to Counting and Probability on AoPS. I thought that Mr. Patrick was a great teacher, and when I didn't understand what was going on, aaronson was always there to help. I look forward to any future classes that I will take on AoPS."
"I learned quite a bit in this course and would look forward to taking the Intermediate Counting class in the future to further improve upon the concepts I learned in this course and learn new techniques. This course has helped me not only become a better problem solver but be able to express my solutions more eloquently."
This course covers basic and intermediate counting concepts, including casework, multiplication, permutations, combinations, Pascal's triangle, probability, combinatorial identities, and the Binomial Theorem. Our innovative online learning system, Alcumus, is integrated with this course.
Week 1: 1, 2, 3; Addition; Venn Diagrams; Multiplication
Week 2: Casework; Construction; Restrictions
Week 3: Overcounting; Combinations
Week 4: Using Combinations; Distinguishability
Week 5: Piles of Counting Problems
Week 6: Introduction to Probability
Week 7: P(not A); Multiplication and Probability
Week 8: Think About It; Geometric Probability
Week 9: Pascal's Triangle
Week 10: Hockey Stick Identity
Week 11: Binomial Theorem
Week 12: Problems, Problems, and More Problems
This course is appropriate for students in grades 6-9 who have mastered basic algebra up through solving linear equations and manipulating multi-variable expressions. This course is roughly the same difficulty as our Introduction to Number Theory class. For those preparing for contests, this course should help with MATHCOUNTS and the AMC 8/10/12 tests.
We recommend trying the following tests to determine whether the class is appropriate for you:
