DPatrick19:29:32
Greetings and welcome to today's Massachusetts Institute of Technology Math Jam!
DPatrick19:29:44
Before I introduce our special guests, I would like to briefly explain our classroom to those who have not previously attended a Math Jam or online class.
DPatrick19:29:58
This classroom is moderated. This means that the messages you type will come to the moderators rather than going directly into the room. The moderators may choose some of the messages and questions to share with all of the participants.
DPatrick19:30:13
Only the moderators have the ability to send private messages in the classroom. Sometimes they will use these to privately respond to your comments.
DPatrick19:30:26
There are likely to be a lot of questions. Please be patient -- the moderators will be answering questions as quickly as they can, but it may take some time for them to get to yours. Also, your question may not necessarily be selected to be answered; please do not take this personally, as we only have a limited amount of time and there may be a lot of questions, so some may not get taken. Please only ask your question once.
DPatrick19:30:49
In addition, there may be a delay between when your question appears and when it is answered -- again, please be patient and give our guests time to type in thorough answers.
DPatrick19:31:00
Now, let me introduce our special guests from MIT!
DPatrick19:31:10
Matt McGann is the Associate Director of Admissions at MIT. Not only is Matt one of the people who reads applications and decides who is admitted, he is also an MIT alumnus (class of 2000), so he can likely answer a lot of your questions about undergraduate life at MIT. Matt's home page is http://www.mitadmissions.org/Matt.shtml.
DPatrick19:31:26
Kiran Kedlaya is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at MIT. His research is in arithmetic algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory. Prof. Kedlaya is a former IMO medalist and serves on the AoPS Foundation Board of Directors. His home page is http://www.mit.edu/~kedlaya/.
DPatrick19:31:37
At this time I will turn the floor over to Matt and Kiran.
MattMcGannMIT19:31:56
Thanks, DPatrick, and thanks to all for coming tonight.
MattMcGannMIT19:32:21
It's hard to believe, but this is the *4th* consecutive fall that we have done this MathJam.
MattMcGannMIT19:32:43
You can view the logs of the past MathJams on the AoPS site.
MattMcGannMIT19:33:15
I serve as one of the Admissions Officers for MIT, helping to admit each year's undergraduate class.
MattMcGannMIT19:33:49
(Graduate admissions is handled on a department-by-department basis; Prof. Kedlaya may be able to tell you more about that)
kedlaya19:34:13
maybe later, if it comes up in a question
MattMcGannMIT19:34:18
There's a lot of information about our admissions process on our Admissions website, http://www.mitadmissions.org
MattMcGannMIT19:34:47
You can also learn a lot about MIT academics, life, and culture on the site
MattMcGannMIT19:35:02
But today, we'll be happy to answer some of your questions.
MattMcGannMIT19:35:11
But first, Prof. Kedlaya will introduce himself.
orl19:35:39
This is a short-cut to previous math jams: http://www.mathlinks.ro/viewtopic.php?p=1274877#1274877
kedlaya19:35:57
Thanks, Matt. I've been a faculty member of the Department of Mathematics since 2003, teaching anything from freshman calculus (some of you may have friends in my multivariable class, 18.022, this semester) to advanced graduate courses.
kedlaya19:36:40
I'll mostly be deferring to Matt for questions about undergraduate life at MIT. But I can answer questions about math classes, majoring in math, graduate study, research opportunities, and so on.
kedlaya19:37:28
Speaking of which, how about we start fielding some questions.
MattMcGannMIT19:38:01
I'd like to meet you with your question, so if you could preface your question with your name, grade, and location, that would be great
MattMcGannMIT19:38:04
For example:
MattMcGannMIT19:38:21
Matt / 12 / NY: How awesome is MIT?
DPatrick19:38:33
Again, for people who arrived late: there are likely to be a lot of questions. Please be patient -- the moderators will be answering questions as quickly as they can, but it may take some time for them to get to yours. Also, your question may not necessarily be selected to be answered; please do not take this personally, as we only have a limited amount of time and there may be a lot of questions, so some may not get taken.
MattMcGannMIT19:38:59
(Thanks for the reminder, DPatrick!)
Lulze19:40:58
Matt / 12 / NH: On average, what percentage of the graduating class consists of math majors?
MattMcGannMIT19:41:00
About 60 students a year major in math, out of ~1000 students in each class year. It is among the top 10 or so most popular majors at MIT. You can see some enrollment statistics at http://web.mit.edu/registrar/www/stats/yreportfinal.html
kedlaya19:41:21
That number goes up to about 100 per year if you include students with a math minor
MattMcGannMIT19:41:59
It is also worth noting that we do not admit by major; students who are admitted can choose any major they like. It is not easier or harder to be admitted as a math major
cricketk19:42:18
What is this about?
cricketk19:42:18
ok
Poincare19:42:18
:D
isiahbunshart1019:42:18
Isaac / 9 / MN How many years of math courses do you have avaliable for undergraduates?
kedlaya19:42:56
That's a hard question to answer, since the closest approximation to the truth is "infinite"
kedlaya19:43:17
Undergraduates can take any course in the department for which they have the appropriate background, including graduate courses.
kedlaya19:43:34
So it's pretty much impossible to "run out" of courses to take.
zephyredx19:43:44
Dai/ 9 / CA: What is MIT's admission rate?
MattMcGannMIT19:43:47
Last year, if memory serves, we received 13,396 applications and admitted 1589 students, for an admission rate of about 11.9%. But remember, just the admission rate tells you very little about the admissions process or the quality of the school.
blackbelt1425319:44:41
Tom/9/NC: what are the hot areas of research in MIT Math Dept.?
kedlaya19:45:18
Our department is relatively large for a top-tier research department (we have about 70 junior and senior faculty), so we cover most of the "hot" areas of current research.
kedlaya19:45:46
We are particularly strong in algebraic topology, differential geometry, representation theory, combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory...
Aylsero19:46:26
Zola/8/VA: Is your financial aid like the University of Pennsylvania in that they prevent you from having loans?
MattMcGannMIT19:46:28
Like many of the wealthy American universities, MIT has a pretty great financial aid program. Most low- and middle-income students are guaranteed no loan, and many pay no tuition. No student is required to take a loan; many students bring in great outside merit awards or do research (in the Math Department, for example) that cover any loan component. The average scholarship (need based) last year was over $30,000/year. We cover all the financial aid that you need.
MattMcGannMIT19:46:58
You can read more here: http://web.mit.edu/sfs/financial_aid/index.html
SimonM19:47:00
Simon / UVI / GBR: How does the level of maths compare between a "Math major" and a Undergraduate (UK) degree in straight maths?
kedlaya19:47:17
It's a bit difficult to compare, because math majors at MIT (and indeed at most US schools) do not take exclusively math courses.
kedlaya19:48:14
However, I think our offerings are pretty comparable to a straight UK-style mathematics degree. We do have an exchange program with Cambridge University, and the students seem to find it pretty easy to fit in both ways.
Poincare19:49:06
how much more work does a double major (math-physics) compared to a single major?
orl19:49:52
What is your view on the impact of the current financial crisis, in particular on the number of domestic and international applicants and admission? Do you expect a higher number of scholarships to be awarded?
MattMcGannMIT19:49:53
(This one is missing the intro, but I'll field it anyway) The current financial crisis will not impact the students we admit at all. We will continue to admit the best students for MIT without regard to financial need, and then will meet the full financial need for every student. If the financial crisis means students need more financial aid, we will meet that with larger need-based scholarships.
kedlaya19:49:58
This just got a lot easier. Nowadays, you only have to meet the MIT general graduation requirements, plus the course requirements for both majors. Since some courses in math count for physics and vice versa, it's pretty easy to do this double major.
MathMasta19:51:09
Matt / 11 / Detroit : When do you aply for MIT
MattMcGannMIT19:51:11
Most students will apply for MIT and other US universities in Oct-Nov-Dec of their final year of secondary school, looking to enter MIT the following Aug-Sept.
Dojo19:51:25
Dojo/7/WA
I know that MIT is more math/tech school but what are the musical aspects of the school like?
kedlaya19:51:30
A lot of students are involved in music activities at MIT. We have several distinguished faculty (including composer John Harbison), and a number of vocal and instrumental groups. In fact, I participate in one myself (the MIT Chamber Chorus).
MattMcGannMIT19:52:40
Music is popular as a double major, as a minor, or just for fun. There are many music classes and music groups at MIT. See http://web.mit.edu/arts/music/index.html
jvenezuela71619:53:09
Justin / CT / 12: Can a freshman math major "test out" of linear algebra or multivariable calc, similar to how the AP BC Calc test allows a freshman to skip an introductory calculus course?
kedlaya19:53:14
For multivariable calculus, there is a placement exam offered just before the fall semester begins. I think there is also a placement exam for linear algebra.
solafidefarms_219:54:47
Billy/12/GA I have a question about homeschooled students. I have only taken outside classes from AOPS, so I don't have another subject teacher for recs. I have in mind someone who has read my written communications and fact sheets, and who has seen/heard me debate with the city council on an issue. Would that be a good person to ask for a rec?
MattMcGannMIT19:54:48
That should be okay. We welcome recommendation letters from those who know you in an academic setting, a non-academic setting, or both. For many homeschooled applicant tips see http://mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/homeschooled_applicants_helpful_tips/index.shtml
Ivan Zhang19:55:10
Zhifan(Ivan) / 12 / CA: Does an international student's application for scholarship affect that person's admission? Thanks.
modularmarc10119:55:10
Marc / 8 / PR: If I were to major in a specific type of math such as number theory, how would that help when applying for a job?
kedlaya19:55:17
Math majors are not expected to specialize in a particular branch of mathematics. Quite the contrary! We expect them to take courses in algebra, geometry, analysis, topology, and so on, so they get a better view of the subject as a whole.
kedlaya19:55:57
Ivan: no, admissions is completely need-blind.
xiaoyan19:57:14
Xiaoyan/11/NC: I'm not really good at sports and have no sports participation at all, but I do have a pretty good record in high leveled academic classes and competitions. Will the weakness in physical activity hurt my chances of getting in?
MattMcGannMIT19:57:15
No. We're not a sports school (though sports are popular among some of our students, with 41 varsity sports and many more doing intramural sports; see http://mitathletics.cstv.com/ and http://web.mit.edu/athletics/www/intramurals/index.html) We do look for evidence of some involvement beyond just classes and studying, but it doesn't need to be in sports.
kedlaya19:57:49
There is a physical education requirement for graduation, but it's not too onerous.
MattMcGannMIT19:58:36
Pretty fun, actually -- many like to do the "pirate degree" with classes in sailing, fencing, and pistol ;-)
MathMasta19:59:27
Matt/11/Detroit : does MIT support students that has already finished all of high school math and finished some of college math
kedlaya19:59:30
Yes. Students entering MIT can pretty much start taking math classes at whatever level is appropriate. I have had freshmen taking my graduate courses on occasion.
MathAndKnowledge20:00:32
If someone achieves a 5 on the AP Calculus BC test, then will they be allowed to skip first/second semester calculus at MIT? Or must that person take a placement exam?
kedlaya20:00:33
5 on the BC will qualify to skip first semester calculus. Second semester is multivariable; the easiest way to skip that is to take the placement exam offered at the beginning of the fall semester.
hypersoar20:01:55
Nathan/12/CA: Is it difficult to change majors?
kedlaya20:01:57
Not really, as long as you have enough time left to finish the course requirements in your new major. Most majors require about 8 advanced courses within the subject (excluding introductory courses, like calculus in the math department).
Hustla2520:02:03
Is the MIT Med School any good?
MattMcGannMIT20:02:05
MIT doesn't have a Medical School, but our undergraduate students are very successful in their applications to medical school, with almost all MIT premed students being admitted to medical schools. I think the biggest advantage MIT students have is the wide availability of research: MIT has the largest neuroscience lab in the world, the most productive bioeningineering lab in the world, and half of MIT's research endeavors are life science-related. Research is open to all students, including many freshmen.
kedlaya20:02:22
We do have a program in Health Sciences and Technology, joint with Harvard Medical School.
MattMcGannMIT20:02:39
see http://hst.mit.edu/
kedlaya20:03:00
And the Broad Institute, on campus, is also a cooperative venture with HMS.
kedlaya20:03:21
In general, the life sciences are a high priority at MIT these days.
stuck20:04:04
Pawel / 12 / IL: I have contacted my interviewer once already, and replied to his e-mail a week ago, yet he has not responded. What is generally considered the appropriate length of time to wait before I contact him again?
MattMcGannMIT20:04:07
A week does seem reasonable. If you have any trouble, let us know at interview -at- mit -dot- edu
isiahbunshart1020:04:34
Isaac / 9 / MN How hard is it to get accepted into RSI? More specificly, what is your acceptance rate?
kedlaya20:04:38
We (MIT) don't actually decide anything about RSI; it's an independent program that does its own admissions, although MIT provides the personnel to oversee the student projects.
MathMasta20:05:15
Joe/11/ MI : What is the average gpa for the admitted students
MattMcGannMIT20:05:16
We don't calculate an average GPA, but most admitted students have mostly As in mostly challenging classes.
MathMasta20:05:29
Matt/11/Detroit: What is the physical education requirement?
kedlaya20:05:32
Four half-semester courses over four years, although students are strongly encouraged to complete them in the first two years.
MattMcGannMIT20:06:21
See http://mitpe.com/
MattMcGannMIT20:06:30
And http://mitpe.com/course-catalog/default.aspx for all the classes
MattMcGannMIT20:07:17
Archery and Juggling are two PE classes I didn't do but sound fun
MattMcGannMIT20:07:28
I loved Sailing and Ice Hockey though
zephyredx20:07:29
Dai / 9 / CA: How does the graduate admission process work?
kedlaya20:07:34
Each department does its own graduate admissions. In math, we have about 25 faculty members reviewing graduate applications. We look mostly at courses taken, grades in those courses, letters of recommendation, and a few other things (like research projects). GRE scores are not really much of a factor, except if they are unusually low.
blackbelt1425320:10:19
Tom/9/NC: I think Matt said at the beginning the the admission is processed department by department and Professor Kedlaya said the admission has nothing to do with the major?
kedlaya20:10:23
Undergraduate admission has nothing to do with the major, while graduate admission is by department.
Max30020:11:52
Akash/12/TX: How does the housing work at MIT?
MattMcGannMIT20:11:53
MIT students love the housing system at MIT. Housing is guaranteed for all 4 years of MIT and most MIT students do choose to stay in MIT housing (90+%). Each of the 11 dorms have their own culture and personality; some are more geeky, some are more social, some are more "normal." Generally, students who stay in the dorms choose to stay in the same dorm for all four years, making it much more than a dorm, making it "home." See http://mitadmissions.org/topics/life/residential_life_housing_options/index.shtml for some more information.
erdogankerem12320:12:09
Is there a limit to the number of students you choose to accept from a certain school (i.e. Philips Exeter)?
MattMcGannMIT20:12:10
No.
DiscreetFourierTransform20:12:29
Matt / 11 / CA: I know that Harvey Mudd College has a program which combines Biology with Math.. Does MIT have anything similar?
kedlaya20:12:32
We don't have a specific degree program. However, students interested in the interrface between math and biology can find lots of undergraduate research opportunities to bridge their interests.
panda12320:13:17
Peter / 10 / CA: What are the most popular science-related majors?
kedlaya20:13:20
By far the most popular is computer science ("Course 6"), with something like 25% of all students. Math, physics, and biology are also pretty sizeable.
SimonM20:14:16
Simon / UVI / GBR : From what I've seen the admissions criteria require a "humanities" report. For those of us studying in the UK no longer studying in that way, how does this work?
MattMcGannMIT20:14:17
We know that students in some curricular systems, like A LEvels, may not be doing any humanities subjects. In this case, you could get a teacher from an O Level subject or just explain your situation and add an additional (non-humanities) recommendation.
Cyndy20:15:01
Cyndy 8 pa Where are the math major students go and what do they do once they graduated from MIT?
kedlaya20:15:03
Our math majors choose a variety of career paths. Some pursue PhDs in math and continue in academic careers; some do likewise in related subjects (physics, computer science). Finance is a popular option, as are various IT-oriented careers.
boarder392220:16:36
Brian/10/CO What are some of the research opportunities available during the vacations?
kedlaya20:16:38
MIT has an extensive Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), through which undergrads can get funding to do research projects with faculty either during vacations or academic terms. The burden is on the student to find a faculty mentor, but many faculty participate in the program. (I've advised maybe 10 students in this way.)
isiahbunshart1020:17:16
Isaac / 9 / MN Once you are accepted to the school, is there any competition for majors?
kedlaya20:17:19
I don't know of any majors that limit enrollment. Certainly math doesn't.
MattMcGannMIT20:17:26
See http://mitadmissions.org/topics/learning/undergraduate_research_opportunities/index.shtml and http://web.mit.edu/urop/
MattMcGannMIT20:17:40
(That was @Brian)
Duelist20:18:27
Should I be worried that MIT is too much of an engineering-driven school when I don't plan to become an engineer but instead plan to study math as a pure art/science?
MattMcGannMIT20:18:28
I wouldn't worry, and I wouldn't call MIT an "engineering school." (It's hard to say that MIT isn't world class in math, biology, physics, economics, architecture, neuroscience, linguistics...) Math as a pure science at MIT is alive and well.
xiaoyan20:18:50
Xiaoyan/ 11/ NC: According to most websites and ratings, MIT and Cal Tech are the best math/science schools in the country. In you opinion, what is the difference between the two schools?
kedlaya20:18:54
The most notable difference is that MIT is substantially larger, with maybe 4 times as many students. This has its pros and cons, but it does mean that we overall have many more programs and opportunities for students.
kedlaya20:19:43
oh, and re the question by Duelist: MIT is consistently ranked #1 or #2 for pure mathematics, so not to worry. :)
Clefairy20:21:19
Danielle/11/MI What kind of clubs, fraternities, erc. do you have?
MattMcGannMIT20:21:20
There are more than 500 different clubs at MIT (wow!). People work hard but also have a lot of fun here. See http://mitadmissions.org/topics/life/student_organizations/index.shtml or see http://web.mit.edu/asa/resources/group-list.html for a complete list of groups
smohanram20:21:34
Can Undergraduate students take class in Sloan school of Management?
kedlaya20:21:36
Yes, Sloan offers undergraduate courses and even an undergraduate degree program. See http://mitsloan.mit.edu.
jvenezuela71620:22:45
Justin / 12 / CT: For Early Action applicants, is it okay to have midyear grade reports sent in January?
rootspie20:22:46
Are there any "jobs" that undergraduates can do on the campus to earn some money?
MattMcGannMIT20:22:46
Yes.
kedlaya20:22:50
Yes, but unlike other schools where these are things like dorm cleaning, most MIT students who get paid are doing research! (Through the UROP program, that is.)
MathMasta20:24:55
Matt/11/Detroit: does MIT have any math competitions
kedlaya20:24:58
I'm not sure how the question is meant, so I'll answer it two ways. One: MIT participates in several national math competitions, including the Putnam (in which we have had extraordinarily strong individual results for the past few years) and the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (in which our students have received top prizes in the last couple of years). We also host a high-school competition jointly with Harvard, the HMMT. See http://hmmt.mit.edu.
lteng20:25:05
I live in an area where the middle schools dont have SAT tests. Will that affect my chances of getting in?
MattMcGannMIT20:25:06
I think you live in China (where secondary schools are called middle schools, and the SAT is not offered), yes? We can be flexible on testing requirements for China since the SAT is not offered. If you have the means, it would be great if you could get out of country to take the exams, but we can be flexible for those without the means who cannot afford to take the exams, especially if you have other verifiable things in your application.
Erken20:26:24
According to the MIT admission web-site regular action apllicants are allowed to take the standartized tests in January.
But does it make sense to pass SAT Subject Test in the end of January? As I know it takes approximately two weeks to deliver the test results into your admission office,so will you receive it in time in this case?
MattMcGannMIT20:26:25
As long as you designate MIT as a score recipient, we will receive January scores in plenty of time.
DiscreetFourierTransform20:27:07
Matt / 11 / CA: I'm going to be going to the Harvard - MIT Math Tournament this year. Will Math faculty be present at the event for students to talk to? I'd like to get a sense for the vibe in the math department in particular.
kedlaya20:27:11
Unfortunately, I'll be out of town that weekend. But there should be someone there who can tell you about MIT math.
MathMasta20:28:54
Matt/11/Detroit :How do you join the UROP program
kedlaya20:28:57
All you have to do is find a faculty member willing to supervise you on a project. Many faculty advertise this using their web sites, or through their department undergraduate offices, or the UROP office.
srs7474720:29:26
Sumedh/ 11/ NJ: What kinds of things make an undergraduate application "jump off the page" during the MIT admissions process? In other words, what makes someone's application stand out from the rest of the applicants who are most likely very studious as well?
MattMcGannMIT20:29:27
Hi Sumedh, I know you're very anxious to have this question answered! It's a tough question, and one that doesn't have an easy answer. Lots of things can make an application stand out. A 42 at the IMO would be great, but it can be many, many things. Some students stand out for their personality, or their extra-curricular accomplishments, or for overcoming a challenging situation. But all of these students must have strong academics and an alignment with MIT's mission and culture. For more detailed thoughts on this, I'd read the blogs at our website, http://mitadmissions.org
modularmarc10120:31:11
Marc / 8 / PR: Was there any reaction to showing MIT in the movie "21" ?
kedlaya20:31:14
Indeed, it was screened here, and there were some talks by the real-life MIT alums whose story inspired the movie.
erdogankerem12320:31:48
David/10/AR: What are some summer oppurtunities for HS students that MIT sponsors/hosts/encourages?
MattMcGannMIT20:31:49
I did a blog entry on this last year: http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/before/summer_programs/juniors_mit_and_other_summer_p.shtml
MattMcGannMIT20:32:08
(Q / A transposed)
erdogankerem12320:32:10
David/ 10/ AR: Are hacks still alive and well at MIT? What are some hacks this year?
kedlaya20:32:49
There is a web page documenting MIT hacks: http://hacks.mit.edu. And yes, they are alive and well; last year, MIT students stole a cannon from Caltech and carried it all the way back across the country to Cambridge.
laptoplover_220:33:31
For how much longer will you be answering questions?
MattMcGannMIT20:33:32
Maybe just a little while longer. A few more questions, and then we'll have to go....
MathMasta20:34:29
Matt/11/MI : Is a lot of MIT joint with Harvard
kedlaya20:34:31
There is a lot of activity between the two places. Students can cross-register between the two, e.g., if you're at MIT and you want to take a foreign language class that we don't offer. There's also a lot of social life, and some jointly organized activities like the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament.
MathMasta20:35:20
Stay longer!!!!!!!!!
modularmarc10120:35:20
dont go...
MattMcGannMIT20:35:21
Aww, thanks! But Prof. Kedlaya has class tomorrow and the applications are piling up for me.... so just a couple more...
kedlaya20:35:54
Yes, just a couple more.
jvenezuela71620:37:36
Justin / 12 / CT: What kind of preparation does the MIT Math Department give towards the Putnam exam?
kedlaya20:37:38
We run a freshman seminar (where "we" = myself, Richard Stanley, and Hartley Rogers) oriented towards the Putnam. This year, we have a number of former IMO participants in the seminar, including 4 out of 6 members of the USA team! There is also a series of practice sessions organized by the Undergraduate Math Association (the "MIT math club") in which recent MIT Putnam luminaries (e.g., Reid Barton, Dani Kane) present some of their favorite problems and solutions.
MathMasta20:38:58
Matt/11/detroit: does MIT have a program for students studying foreign languages
MattMcGannMIT20:39:02
Yes! All students at MIT do coursework in both math/science/engineering as well as humanities/arts/social sciences, and foreign languages are a popular option. MIT even has an entire department of Foreign Languages & Literatures: http://web.mit.edu/fll/www/ And for languages we don't offer, you can cross register at Harvard or Wellesley. And once you learn the language, MIT has many study-, research-, and work-abroad opportunities... see: http://global.mit.edu
modularmarc10120:39:13
What classes do you all of you teach?
kedlaya20:39:15
Most of us in the math department teach various introductory courses (calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, real analysis) plus advanced courses in our specialties (in my case: algebraic number theory, algebraic geometry, analytic number theory).
sakm5510@hotmail.com20:39:35
Not everyone gets to IMO. Are USAMO qualifiers also considered for admission?
MattMcGannMIT20:39:36

Cici/12/CA: for the actual application, what is the leeway on the number of words per essay. Is it ok if I go over by 50 words?
MattMcGannMIT20:40:09
