I made a video for ARML I-10. It was the most challenging problem in individual, and I found it to be the most interesting problem in ARML. Due to some tech issues, it was never administered :(

Original Problem (Roots of Unity)
qrxz17   1
Problem: A regular hexagon in the complex plane has its center located at the complex number \(C=338+169i\). Its vertices are given by the complex numbers \(z_0,z_1,z_2,z_3,z_4,z_5\).

What is \(z_0+z_1+z_2+z_3+z_4+z_5\)?

Answer: Click to reveal hidden text

Solution: A regular hexagon centered at the origin has the sum of its coordinates equal to \(0\) since the coordinates correspond to the 6th roots of unity scaled by the radius. Since the sum of all n-th roots of unity is zero, the coordinates add up to zero.

The center was translated to \(338 + 169i\), so all corresponding vertices of the hexagon are also translated by \(338 + 169i\).

We have
\begin{align*}
        & (z_0 + 338 + 169i) + (z_1 + 338 + 169i) + (z_2 + 338 + 169i) \\
& + (z_3 + 338 + 169i) + (z_4 + 338 + 169i) + (z_5 + 338 + 169i) \\
&= (z_0 + z_1 + z_2 + z_3 + z_4 + z_5) + 6(338 + 169i) \\
&= 0 + 6(338 + 169i) = \boxed{2028 + 1014i}.
    \end{align*}

Given triangle $ABC$ inscribed in $(O)$, $M, N$ are respectively the midpoints of the major and minor arcs $BC$. Let $I$ be the center of the inscribed circle, $R$ be $A-mix$, $D$ is the intersection point of the line through $A$ parallel to $BC$ with $(O)$. $DI$ intersects $AR$ at $K$, take $L$ on $AK$ so that $LI//BC$. $NL$ intersects $(O)$ at $G$, $AG$ intersects $LI$ at $Z$. Prove that: $ZM$ is perpendicular to $KN$.

Problem: Janina was able to “extend” the complex number \( \mathbb{C} \) into what she calls the \(\textit{Kompurekkusu}\) numbers, \( \mathbb{K} \), by including her favorite letter, \( j \). This \( j \) behaves much like \( i \) except that \( j^2 = 1 \), but \( j \) is not any complex number (particularly not 1 nor \(-1\)).

For \( r, s, t, u \in \mathbb{R} \), what is the sum of all solutions \( \kappa = (r + si) + (t + ui)j \in \mathbb{K} \) such that \( \kappa^4 = 4 \) and both \( i \) and \( j \) appear with nonzero coefficients?

Answer: Click to reveal hidden text

Solution: Let \(A=r+si\) and \(B=t+ui\). We have
\begin{align*}
        k^4&=(A+Bj)^4 \\
        &= (A^2+B^2+2ABj)^2 \\
        &= (A^4+B^4+6A^2B^2) + 4AB(A^2+B^2)j.
    \end{align*}For this to be equal to \(4\), which is a real number, \(4AB(A^2+B^2)\) must be equal to \(0\).

If \( B = 0 \), then \( Bj = 0 \), which fails to meet the condition that \( j \) must appear with nonzero coefficients.

If \( A = 0 \), then \( r + si = 0 \), which can only occur if both \( r = 0 \) and \( s = 0 \). So,
\begin{align*}
        4&=[(t+ui)j]^4 \\
        4&=(t+ui)^4 \\
        4&=r^4(\cos4\theta+i\sin4\theta)
    \end{align*}
We are then going to find the roots of unity. But we are only asked for the sum, which we know is equal to \(0\).

If, \(A^2+B^2=0\). We have any of the following cases:
\begin{align*}
        A &= \pm iB \\
        B &= \pm iA
    \end{align*}
So,
\begin{align*}
        4&=(\pm iB+ Bj)^4 \\
        4&=[B(\pm i+j)]^4 \\
        4&=B^4(-4)\\
        -1&=B^4
    \end{align*}and
\begin{align*}
        4&=(A \pm Aij)^4 \\
        4&=[A(1\pm ij)]^4 \\
        4&=A^4(-4)\\
        -1&=A^4
    \end{align*}
Thus, the solutions \(\kappa\) are the fourth roots of unity of \(-1\). We know that the sum of all \( n \)th roots of unity is zero, so the sum of all the solutions is \(\boxed{0}\).

Comment. The original problem asks for how many solutions we have for \(\kappa\).

Find f(1)+f(3)+f(5)+...+f(7999)
Darealzolt   1
It is known that
\[
f(x) = \frac{1}{\sqrt[3]{x^2+2x+1}+\sqrt[3]{x^2-1}+\sqrt[3]{x^2-2x+1}}

[Signups Now!] - Inaugural Academy Math Tournament
elements2015   3
Hello!

Pace Academy, from Atlanta, Georgia, is thrilled to host our Inaugural Academy Math Tournament online through Saturday, May 31.

AOPS students are welcome to participate online, as teams or as individuals (results will be reported separately for AOPS and Georgia competitors). The difficulty of the competition ranges from early AMC to mid-late AIME, and is 2 hours long with multiple sections. The format is explained in more detail below. If you just want to sign up, here's the link:

https://forms.gle/ih548axqQ9qLz3pk7

If participating as a team, each competitor must sign up individually and coordinate team names!

Detailed information below:

Divisions & Teams

Junior Varsity: Students in 10th grade or below who are enrolled in Algebra 2 or below.

Varsity: All other students.

Teams of up to four students compete together in the same division.

(If you have two JV‑eligible and two Varsity‑eligible students, you may enter either two teams of two or one four‑student team in Varsity.)

You may enter multiple teams from your school in either division.

Teams need not compete at the same time. Each individual will complete the test alone, and team scores will be the sum of individual scores.

Competition Format
Both sections—Sprint and Challenge—will be administered consecutively in a single, individually completed 120-minute test. Students may allocate time between the sections however they wish to.

Sprint Section

25 multiple‑choice questions (five choices each)

recommended 2 minutes per question

6 points per correct answer; no penalty for guessing

Challenge Section

18 open‑ended questions

answers are integers between 1 and 10,000

recommended 3 or 4 minutes per question

8 points each

You may use blank scratch/graph paper, rulers, compasses, protractors, and erasers. No calculators are allowed on this examination.

Awards & Scoring

There are no cash prizes.

Team Awards: Based on the sum of individual scores (four‑student teams have the advantage). Top 8 teams in each division will be recognized.

Individual Awards: Top 8 individuals in each division, determined by combined Sprint + Challenge scores, will receive recognition.
How to Sign Up
Please have EACH STUDENT INDIVIDUALLY reserve a 120-minute window for your team's online test in THIS GOOGLE FORM:
https://forms.gle/ih548axqQ9qLz3pk7
EACH STUDENT MUST REPLY INDIVIDUALLY TO THE GOOGLE FORM.
You may select any slot from now through May 31, weekdays or weekends. You will receive an email with the questions and a form for answers at the time you receive the competition. There will be a 15-minute grace period for entering answers after the competition.

happy configs
KevinYang2.71   60
Source: USAJMO 2024/2
Let $m$ and $n$ be positive integers. Let $S$ be the set of integer points $(x,y)$ with $1\leq x\leq 2m$ and $1\leq y\leq 2n$. A configuration of $mn$ rectangles is called happy if each point in $S$ is a vertex of exactly one rectangle, and all rectangles have sides parallel to the coordinate axes. Prove that the number of happy configurations is odd.

purpose of online classes
thaatonlineguy   6
What is the benefit to paying 700$ for a class on AOPS? As I see it, paying only around 100$ for a book, then using alcumus and public forums for free offers the same features, and is much cheaper than paying 700$ for a class. Do classes have some other benefit that isnt accessible on aops for free?

PAGE NOT SCROLLING DOWN ALL THE WAY; GETS STUCK 1.5 POSTS BEFORE THREAD END
CurlyFalcon55   8
Summary of the problem:
Whenever I push the big, top right "Reply" button– NOT THE SMALL LITTLE "QUICK REPLY" BAR ON THE BOTTOM, and reply, I can't scroll down all the way to the bottom of the thread that I just posted in. Sometimes, very rarely though, I doesn't scroll down all the way when I push the "Quick Reply" bar.

-----Page URL:
Anywhere in the "Introduction to Number Theory" forum in AoPS

-----Steps to reproduce:

1. Go to the link above.

2. Click any thread or create a new one.

3. Click the "Reply" button, not the quick reply bar.

4. Type a reply.

5. Push the "Submit" button.

6. Try to scroll down. if you’re lucky, the problem will reproduce.

-----Expected behavior:
To scroll all the way down.

-----Frequency:
Almost every time I push the big "Reply" button, sometimes (but rarely) when I push the "Quick Reply" bar.

-----Operating system(s):
macOS Sequoia 15.4.1

-----Browser(s), including version:
Chrome, (I don't know what version)

-----Additional information:
-It rarely does it in the "Quick Reply" bar.
-It almost always does it in the big "Reply" button on the top right.

-----Can anyone reproduce?
