Uh, what career? Obviously, a career in academia will pay less than a high-flying investment banker, and even in academia, large research institutions are likely to pay more than smaller schools. People who go into a science/applied math/engineering field will make a different salary than someone who goes into business.

And math is not the money, it's about the joy of math.

@ shanmug1000 : You haven't explicitly mentioned which kind of 'career' in Math you intend to pursue.

A career in academia gets lesser pay than, say, a career in Investment Banking (There are various designations in I-banking, say, like -- Quant,Trader, etc). If you want to know how much pay one receives in the latter, refer to the post below by AoPS founder Richard Rusczyk in "Careers in Mathematics Announcements section."

do traders and/or quants often or even

by plain or train or however to meet with clients. also, if it's appropriate for
this forum, whats the approximate beginning salary for a trader or quant, and
what sort of bonus and salary increases are there?

Travel: Depends on the job. I went to Russia, Argentina, and Brazil as part of
my trading job. Others in my group went to Japan and London.

Salary: I'll defer to Sandor on starting salary, but I'll note that if expected
value of year five-ten salary is what's most important to you, you will not find
a better profession anywhere than going into trading, provided you have the
requisite skills and desire. If you want to be a multi-billionaire, you'll have to
start your own Google or Dell, but if you'll be happy with at least a
mid-6-digit salary after being in a career for several years, then finance/trading
is a good bet. It's no guarantee this will happen, to be sure, but if you get with
a good company and do good work, you won't be in a position to complain
about the pay.

I think as a result of the "Global Economic Downturn" salaries will no longer be as what they used to be in the past. (at least in Investment Banking)

That's a very stressful job, and it requires a lot of very hard work. My friend's father is an anesthesiologist, and he's always working odd hours, and always on call. Plus, you are responsible for the patient who's under-you mess up and you might have a very big lawsuit on your hands.
