 Asking For Help Rules

Some guidelines that you should follow when you are asking for help:

Thread Title
  • Make your title fairly descriptive and concise. A good example is "MATHCOUNTS Number Theory"; a bad example is "HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Post the source of the problem.

Posting the Problem
  • Use proper spelling and grammar (to the best of your abilities). People who are here to help you out don't want to wade through something like "if 3x/4-x+18=2 what is x".
  • Attach a diagram when applicable.
  • Search the problem before you post it.

What You Tried
  • Post what you attempted, even if it may not have worked. We are not here to give you solutions, we are here to help you learn.
  • Be detailed.

Questions
  • Ask specific questions; it makes it easier for those helping you.

Replies
  • Be respectful of the opinions given to you.
  • If you disagree with a reply, cite examples or give some sort of analysis supporting why you disagree.

Basic Etiquette
  • Don't make a post to thank somebody who has helped you; even though it is respectful, it clutters up the forum. Private message them instead.
  • Don't make a post to tell somebody to stop spamming. Private message them instead.
  • Don't make a post asking a moderator to lock a thread. Private message the moderator instead.

Would it be okay to post the source in the subject and the math subject in the subject description.

Example:

2009 Workout 4 Problem 5 (Subject)
Counting/Probability (Subject description)

At least in the olympiad forum, i think its encouraged if you do that to put as a subtitle stuff about the problem like "Process terminates" "Count number of black squares" etc

I would have to agree with the last bullet. Moderators don't have time to sift through all the threads looking for someone's post asking them to lock a thread. I'm sure that this is a natural reaction, but you have not been informed. Wink

Also adding on to what AIME said, mods do not have to post something when they lock a top. They could just pm the person telling them about the reason for the lock instead of posting.

Also, I think that people using other forums should be aware of these rules (maybe post them as stickies on other forums?) Lately, I've noticed a lot of people in the Middle School Classroom Math forum, and there are many other forums, not "abiding" to these guidelines.
