Once you are on some channel (like lobby) that's on the list, you just type "/join #mathlinks" and it sends you there

For those who wish to join the chat:
Step 1: Go to http://www.euirc.net/en/javachat.php
Step 2: Put your nickname in, write some comment, choose channel lobby and click on chat. (no password needed)
Step 3: When you get in the channel, type in "/j #mathlinks" (without the quotes, of course) and press enter.
Step 4: Theres no step 4.

Just in case one doesn't want to read that very long first page ( ), here again the values if you want to configure some client:
For those new to IRC there is some html-client:
- go to http://webchat.euirc.net/webchat/en/
- enter some nickname, leave the password and Username unchanged
- choose some random channel at the bottom, for example "#euirc - General information channel"
- click on "go"
- in the empty line you see type:
"/join #mathlinks "
and press enter [and don't forget the single space between "\join" and "#mathlinks" ].
- voila, there you are
Similarily, you could go to http://www.euirc.net/en/javachat.php and procede by more or less the same procedure.
You can also use some general clients like mIRC, Miranda or Trillian. The properties you need for EuIRC are::
- server: irc.euirc.net::6665-6669
- channel: #mathlinks
Now a small introduction to how to use IRC:
Nicknames:
In EuIRC, you can register nicknames (the one you have on MathLinks/AoPS would be prefered ). You do this by typing
"/ns REGISTER [password] [email] "
where [password] is a password of your choice and [email] is some e-mail address (as a matter of fact you are required to do this, but there will normally be no mails sent to you by this, except you want to recover it, see below).
If you are logged but haven't used the password at the beginning, you can still log in by
"/ns IDENTIFY [password] ".
Conversely, if the nickname you used to log in is already in use or registered, the server will automatically change your name to something like "guest[some number]" after one minute. Don't be afraid:
If you want to change your nickname, type
"/nick [new_nickname] "
where [new_nickname] is the name you want to have. If this one is registered or in use, the same as described above will happen again.
In case you forgot your password, you can recover it by typing
"/ns sendpass [nickname] "
where [nickname] is the nickname you lost the password for. It will be sent to the e-mail adress you registered with.
There is another problem called "ghosts". If by some reason your connection to the server is interrupted, it's possible that your old nickname is still in the channel. As a result, you can't use that nickname untill it's gone (they will be kicked out automatically after some time). If your nickname is registered, you can type
"/ns GHOST [nickname] [password] "
where [nickname] and [password] are as before what the terms indicate. After doing this, you can use that nickname again.
Private messages:
If you want to talk to a single person only type
"/msg [name] [message] "
where [name] is the person you want to talk to and [message] is the message you want to send. You can also type
"/msg [name_1],[name_2],...,[name_n] [message] "
to write to more than one user. Note that there should be no space between the names and the commas. Most clients (especially the two linked above) allow you to do double click on the usernames (either in the list or even in the chat) to open a window you can talk to that choosen person; this windows will pop up in those clients if you get a new message, too.
There are some more features (e.g. memos), but the above should suffice for most you will ever want to do. If any questions, ask in the channel
I (we) hope to see you soon

This may be easier for the unofficial Mathcounts Math Jam chats over AIM.

1. every one would need yahoo messenger.
2. to chat in YIM, you need invitations I think.
3. it's simply better to use protocols like IRC that were made for multi user chatting as they offer more possibilities.

Surely I will not.
Either IRC, Jabber, or some "local" chat. Everything else is evil

I have just joined that #mathlinks channel. It is really dead Only 1 member and there is a silence mode enabled. Though in my POV it was a good idea to create such a channel.

Everytime someone opens a channel, it lasts about one week until most people don't visit it anymore and it just dies...
