The MC catalog doesn't have '86
why would you want 86
they have 40 questions instead of 30 so they really dont help much
I'll do the first 30 then...

Is there any free legal way to access a past (2005 or earlier) test? Yashar.biz lacks the nationals, and I'd like to try them. How much do the nationals cost? and where is the catalog?

Go to www.mathcounts.org and click "MATHCOUNTS Store". Then check out Page 7, in particular. Some items may be out of print. Be sure you ask how long it will take before you receive your order.

I think that http://mathcounts.saab.org/mc.cgi/ has some national problems on their website. i don't think all of them are, but it is still good practice if you are a little bit weak in a certain part of math, or if you just want to do problems. If you ask me, i'm just doing all of the drills to get the experience so i can make nats.

Is it coincidence that the previous line spells something with it's first letters? I think not.

I'll try that, thanks. My school & coach aren't very serious about Mathcounts; almost always no one goes to state, so they don't have any nationals.

Well last year was the 1st time a kid from my school went to nats, and we didn't have any of the nats tests at my school until he got them from the state coach, but we still got 2nd at states last year (with a pitiful 7 on the team round. 1st team had a 10, heh)

Just thought that I could help resolve this issue by posting a couple of e-mails received from MATHCOUNTS. Of course, AOPS can supersede me.
Quote:
Tommy,
Thank you for contacting MATHCOUNTS. Unfortunately, if the competition sets are not available for purchase through Sports Awards at 1-800-621-5803 or sales@sportsawardsonline.com , they are not available to distribute. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions.

Tommy,
Any tests you purchase through Sports Awards may be distributed to your students or other coaches. Unfortunately, the only tests available at all are the ones sold through Sports Awards. If a test isn't available in that catalog, you may want to try posting a message on the Coaches Forum at: http://forum.infosrc.com:8080/~mc_coaches . You may be able to get ahold of a copy from another coach. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

So it sounds like if you bought the test from Sports Awards, you are free to distribute it and if you can't, then you have to get it from another coach. Which to me implies that it can be distributed freely.

the previous statements regard problems like the whole sprint round. But what's the rule regarding masters' round?

Copyright rules should be the same, so it should be the same for Master's.

Will MathCounts post any of the National problems from this year anywhere? I was hoping to see some of the problems from the competition.

They have not posted complete National contests in the past, and I doubt they will post them this year. They already posted the winning Countdown Question. They usually post one sample question each, from Sprint, Target, and Team on their Web Site (Problem of the Week and/or their next Newsletter).
You should be able to buy the (nearly) complete contests from Sports Awards, this fall.
Each team's official State Coach gets a copy of the contest. In many cases, the State Coach makes copies for their team. If your coach knows the State coach or if you know any of your State's team members, you might discretely ask them. [Do not post or PM actual copies of the contest on AoPS, please.]
Specific individual questions may usually be posted as separate topics in the MATHCOUNTS Forum.
