How far do I have to go in the sum

1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + 1/5 + . . .

until I have a total that is greater than 2\frac{1}{2}?

(I mean, what is the last term I have to include in that sum to get a sum that is greater than 2\frac{1}{2})

This is a pretty interesting question..

what I woud do is change 2 and 1/2 to a mixed fraction which is 5/2

5/2 - 1 = 3/2
3/2 - 1/2 = 2/2
3/3 - 1/3 = 2/3
8/12 - 4/12 = 4/12
4/12 - 3/12 = 1/12
5/60 - 12/60 = wich becomes negative

so it's 12/60 = 1/5

Shinwoo, you made a tiny mistake there -- why don't you try it again? (Your method is good!)

Look at the values you subtracted -- first you took out 1, then 1/2, then 1/3, then what?

Old topics are starting to come back because math92 is going back to all the old questions in this forum and posting on them even though they are old.

start with what shinwoo did
5/2 - 1 = 3/2
3/2 - 1/2 = 2/2
2/2 - 1/3 = 2/3
2/3 - 1/4 = 8/12 - 3/12 = 4/12
4/12 - 1/5 = 20/60 - 12/60 = 8/60
8/60 - 1/6 = 8/60 - 10/60 = -2/60
which is negative, so its actually 1/6
just a tiny mistake
