Not really. You are not taking in account the fact that the procent of the population going to school is more or less closer to say 90% in all China, USA and Romania, but really really smaller in India.

The current figures for India are MUcH higher than you imply. There are few states (like Kerala - population larger than Romania) - where this percentage is even comparable/larger than US or Romania) (In any case, the actual number of people going to high school in India is much larger (about 3 or 4 times) than USA)

IMHO, in India NMO, IMO are not that popular, the best students look for JEE etc and a high rank in JEE will get you more fame than a gold medal in IMO. .. You don't get the best students interested ..Hopefully this will change and more bright students would be more interested in Math.

A little related I just read in a paper about current literacy figures (about 70%)
here. what is interesting that the figures were in 30% range when India got independence.(Even 1991 figures were in 50% range) What is even more important and nice is that in school going age these figures are much higher(close to 90% range depending on states) . In States like Kerala the figures (High 90%) are higher than, say USA.

BTW talkig about statistics - I read an article in Boston globe a few days ago sayinng something like -
"22 percent of the students at Quincy High School are Asian, yet they account for 94+%
of the math club" .. Smile

Anyway any news about India's team in this IMO?

Speaking directly from the source, I would be very surprised if the US got even 3 gold this year. Top 10 placement is probably in doubt as well. Everybody is decent, but too many points will be lost on 3 and 6.

As an interesting sidenote there was no perfect exam this year although the student with the 41 had a score distribution of 6/7/7/7/7/7 Smile

Will you bet me on this one? (I'd say at least 3 golds for US team Mr. Green).

While we are taking bets, can I bet too, that one (and exactly one) of you are right? Smile

You can bet but if US gets 3 golds, then you lose Mr. Green

They are members on this site (all of them) some of which have taken some AoPS Classes.

My opinion for the top 3 countries is

1. China
2. Russia
3. US

Don't expect a gold from me, I'd be enourmously happy with bronze Smile.
I bet no-one in our team will get gold this year :'-(. Three or four bronze medals would be more realistic, maybe one silver. Our team is certainly not the strongest Belgium had ever had (Arne's gone... Smile). At least David has already shown how to get a medal last year.
And about Goulong (the supertalented 'Chinese imort' in our Belgian team). My guess: 2005: bronze. 2006: silver. 2007: gold . Very Happy

i don't say we have the best team, but hey... what can a small country like ours do against huge nations who really train their students for these kinds of competitions Smile
i mean... we only have one serious maths competition Confused (with two pre-rounds who aren't challenging at all Sad )

but then again, from time to time someone like Arne pops up Razz
