 Problem Series(es?)

What are the recommended AMC/AIME scores if you want to enroll in the AMC 10/12 or AIME Problem Series(es)?

And is the AIME Problem Series going to be offered in the Spring? And when do the Spring courses end?

I've never taken AMC or AIME (I'm in 8th grade) but I got 6 on an AIME from 1984 (probably about a 3 or 4 on a current AIME.) I'm good with all the Intro courses (I'm taking counting right now) and in the fall and spring I want to take Intermediate Algebra, Intermediate Complex Numbers/Trig, and AIME Problem Series if possible. I'm actually not sure if I'll be able to make AIME if I take AMC 12 right now, but would I be able to if I took the Intermediate courses before I took the AMC 12? Would those help much?

Thanks in advance for your help, guys. Smile

If you aren't sure if you can make AIME, I would suggest taking an AMC problem series (probably AMC 12). But if you're pretty confident about making the AIME and want a little challenge, the AIME problem series might be better. I haven't taken either, so I'm getting my ideas from what other people have said. You probably want a first-hand source. I'm pretty sure any intermediate class would be good to take and would definitely help, but if you want direct contest practice the problem series are the way to go.

I would say take AIME series. First of all, u have plenty of time to prepare for AMC12, given the fact that i am assuming you are under 11th grade. Which comes to my second point, that is, you only need cutoff score to go to USAMO. So, I would suggest doing AIME Problem Series. I have taken both, and I liked AIME better. It raised my score; AMC12 series didnt do very much help.

Hm, makes you wonder where school has actually gone to.

Oh well, you're still in middle school.

If you're borderline to make the AIME, take the AMC 10 Problem Series.

If you're likely to make the AIME, but typically solve from 0-3 AIME problems, take the AMC 12 Problem Series.

If you're completely secure about making the AIME and typically solve 3-10 problems on the AIME, take the AIME Problem Series.

That's the closest advice I can give, but it's based on the design of the courses.

I've heard that Intermediate courses help with AMC 12, so if I take Intermediate Trig this fall, and Intermediate Algebra in spring (if it's offered) along with AIME problem series (if it's offered) then will I be likely to, first of all, make the AIME, and also hopefully get 5+?

Hi, I've got a question: What does intermediate algebra and trig contain?

A few things:

First, most students who take Intermediate level courses and the AIME Problem Series do fairly well or very well on the AIME, but that's more a function of how hard students work than anything. Of course, a student needs to be prepared for the material in the subject classes, so the pretests are very important indicaters.

Second, the Intermediate Trig/Complex Numbers class is a fair amount harder than the Intermediate Algebra class, but it's up to you as to the order in which you take them. Just know that it's possible that you'll have to look back and restudy some of the Trig/Complex Numbers after you've studied it once and have spent more time focusing on the kinds of algebraic manipulations covered in the Intermediate Algebra class.
