How to use this board

The Intermediate Topics board is for problems and questions that are beyond the basics, but not quite olympiad level. These are problems that might be on the AMC, AIME, Mandelbrot, or ARML. If you're not sure what level your problem or question is, you can generally use the other posts in the board as a guideline.

Generally, the Intermediate Topics board will include topics of high school math such as trigonometry, polynomials, conditional probability, logarithms, etc., as well as some broader beginning problem solving techniques such as basic problems in induction or the pigeonhole principle.

Moderators will occasionally post Challenge Problems (which will be designated as such) - if you feel you are already sufficiently advanced that most of the problems in this board are pretty easy for you, please leave the Challenge Problems for less experienced students. Anything not marked a challenge should be considered a question - we welcome our more experienced members to answer these questions. Also, if you are not a moderator but have a good Challenge Problem, please post it!

As the new moderator in town, I'd like to remind everyone that the level of problems posted on this board should adhere to the guidelines posted above by Mr. Rusczyk. In general, Olympiad problems should almost always be posted in one of the Advanced forums unless it is unusually easy. Recently, problems posted in both the Getting Started and Intermediate forums have been too difficult for their respective forums. Problems like this will be moved if necessary.

Solve away! Wink

Hello JSRosen3! Wow, I've been gone only about 4-5 weeks or so during summer vacation and mathcamp, and the intermediate forum has three new moderators! Cool.

Recently, a large number of challenge problems have been posted in the Intermediate forum. Unfortunately, a number of them have been solved by people who are clearly above the intermediate level (more towards the IMO medalist level). Thus, I will remove any more such solutions and leave the problems open to more inexperienced solvers. Of course, anyone should answer questions.

A request to all users of this forum: please put your solutions in spoiler! Exceptions are made only if they involve a lot of LaTeX or the original poster specifically asked for help on a problem. It is really appreciated here!

Thank you!

I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you proposing that this site make sections for other sciences? If so, that has already been discussed and it would take a really convincing argument to get one built.

I think you meant to ask for some links to those kinds of sites. I really haven't extensively looked for message boards for other sciences, however. But I used to look at the following site a little bit:

www.scienceforums.net/forums/

I'm sure the other members could help find more...and I'm pretty sure there are other posts about stuff like this.

Hi joml88,

Yes I was asking for some similar sites on Physics problem solving.

thanks anyway

This has just recently become an issue. Please refrain from posting homework problems in this forum. Thank you. This forum isn't an answering machine for homework - it's a place where mathematical ideas can be exchanged and discussed.

Only certain people can add problems to the database.

However, if you can't directly add problems we can still greatly use your help!

If you want to help out with a certain contest such as AMC, AIME, USAMO, IMO, etc. you can PM me and I'll tell you who to get in contact with. There are certain people who are predominantly in charge of each competition so you should ask what they need help with.

Want to help with the AMC or the AIME? Just directly pm me. Smile

Is it just me, or are the problems in this thread a bit more than AMC level.

Maybe on average an AIME #10?

What section does College Algebra go in? It's ironic because it has the word "College," but this is a high school board.

Assuming you're not talking about Group Theory, probably in High School Basics/ Middle School.

No you need not, just type in \frac{\text{dollar signs}}{\text{to make}}\left(\text{wonderful}\right)^{\text{formulas}} Wink
Also look at this.

And you need one extremely important software... a webbrowser Mr. Green

I would like to ask admins to discuss about this type of behavior with the named user. I really don't want to see the professionalism of this forum to go down.

@everyone: Do not feed the troll.
