(Progress of the 2nd MOCKUSAMO) II

Well this is pretty awesome! I have written the first draft, and it looks like the problems I have accumulated will be enough for two mock usamos this year. Furthermore, I believe that my problems are pretty realistic difficulty-wise compared to normal USAMO problems. I also made an effort to imitate the USAMO's focus on low-tech problems, i.e. problems that essentially all USAMO qualifiers would have enough knowledge to solve. I think at least 5 of the 6 problems will definitely fit under that category.

The first mock USAMO will be held some time near Thanksgiving, probably with 3-4 days before and after the main break. The test won't be timed. I especially encourage MOPpers to take this; you guys should get some practice throughout the year.

Well guess what I already have a pretty big shortlist (15 probs), so I think what will happen is I will hold a mockusamo around Thanksgiving and another one around Christmas, assuming about 10-12 more problems will pop up before then. Meanwhile, anyone not interested in taking the test, please submit some (preferably hard) combinatorics problems for the shortlist! Also in demand (from greatest to least) are combinatorial geometry, number theory, non-inequality algebra, and medium geometry.

2nd MOCKUSAMO

I'm going to write another mock USAMO for this year, but I'm going to start now so I have lots and lots of time to edit it and make/pick good problems. I also don't feel like spending that much time on it myself, so anyone who wants to help write problems can comment here. The scheduled release date is somewhere around winter break.

Since the news is out, I'd like to congratulate probability1.01 for scoring a 41 on the USAMO.

This is an incredible achievement worthy of praise of the highest order. No other 14-year-old in the history of the Olympiad has ever scored this high, not even the legendary Reid Barton.

I saw the blog option on AoPS and now I'm going to mess around with it a bit... *thinks* ok here is a mildly amusing little problem:

There are three people living in Generositown. Each of them has a dollar, and each day they give one dollar (or none if they don't have any) to another person (at random). What is the probability that they each have a dollar after 100 days?

I'm hoping to come up with a more interesting variant of this problem... but too sleepy right now Sad
