Want to learn how to tackle those tough MATHCOUNTS and AMC counting and probability problems? Check out Art of Problem Solving's Introduction to Counting & Probability by David Patrick.

This guide is designed to help teachers use our site. We strongly recommend teachers also read the Student Guides which are appropriate for their students.

In most classrooms teachers have students of widely varying interest and ability. Many teachers rarely have the time and opportunity to challenge the most avid students, as to do so would leave the rest of the class behind. Fortunately, we at the Art of Problem Solving had teachers who solved this problem by giving us access to more challenging material and opportunities to excel in extracurricular programs. We now help today's teachers and students by providing these materials and programs.

Books

Our Art of Problem Solving textbooks have been used by top students and schools for over 10 years. Volume 1 is for students in grades 7 through 9 and beginners in grade 10, and Volume 2 is for more experienced students.

We are now producing a new series of textbooks. The first two texts, Introduction to Counting & Probability and Introduction to Geometry, are now available, and are ideal for beginning problem solvers in grades 6-10 who have mastered basic algebra.

We also offer books from the popular extracurricular programs MOEMS and MATHCOUNTS. Click here to visit our online bookstore to learn more about these books.

These books are used by many math teams for preparation for contests like MATHCOUNTS and the American Mathematics Competitions. Some students who have accelerated beyond the classroom curriculum are given these books to augment their studies, sometimes as part of an in-school independent study program. Many use our free message boards to ask questions as they read the books.

Forum

The Art of Problem Solving Forum is for students, parents, and teachers to discuss various math problems and other topics of interest to people interested in math. The Forum is free, and teachers are encouraged to ask any questions they might have about resources for eager students of mathematics.

Classes

Our classes emphasize extracurricular problem solving mathematics. Some schools use our classes to train their math teams, while others enroll students who have exhausted the school's mathematics offerings. We offer discounts to schools or math teams who enroll 4 or more students in the same course. We also have some teachers who take our courses to brush up on areas of problems solving.

We have four types of classes:

Just as with the standard curriculum, students who 'skip levels' in our classes often suffer for it. Students should be advised to take the results of the pre-tests and post-tests we offer seriously. We find that students who take classes before they are ready struggle much more than those who take the classes at the proper time in their development.

If you have any questions about our classes, you can contact us or post in the Online Classes forum. You can click here to join our mailing lists to receive email notification about new classes and upcoming Math Jams.

Resources

Our Resources pages include:

We also offer a thorough tutorial on the LaTeX typesetting system, which is used by most professional mathematicians to write papers.

Contests

High school students and very advanced middle schoolers should try the USA Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS). The USAMTS is described by some mathematicians as more like what they do for a living than any other math contest because students are given a full month to write detailed solutions to challenging problems. Participation is free.
