Doing Math Like a Physicist

In this math jam, we will preview many of the topics covered in more depth in our Introduction to Physics course. Join us to get a preview of what AoPS physics looks like! When we encounter something unexpected in the world, it can spark curiosity or a spirit of exploration: we want to know more. When we respond to that curiosity by conducting experiments and building quantitative models, we're doing physics. In this math jam, we'll take a look at a phenomenon called "Brownian motion." We'll use scientific practices such as observation, experiment, data analysis, and mathematical reasoning to understand how Brownian motion works, and by the end of the journey we'll see how the decades-long quest to explain this phenomenon led to one of the most important results in modern physics.

COVID ruined 2020, but math can help! Do you want to help to bring your part of the world back towards normalcy? Math teams around the country are helping to develop a completely new approach to contact tracing to help make school reopening safer, using graph theory. Po-Shen Loh will talk about the NOVID app, which acts like a "COVID radar." For each positive case, instead of just asking the direct contacts to quarantine, NOVID tells everyone how many relationships away the case was (so "2" is a contact of a contact). This lets people actively avoid getting sick. This session will be an Ask-Me-Anything style interactive discussion about how this math-powered system works, so that interested students can have the understanding to bring this innovation to their communities.

This lets us solve quite a few interesting problems without knowing lots of physics background, and gives a glimpse into what it means to approach problems like a physicist. Students should have a background in algebra for this physics jam, but do not need prior experience with physics.
