Greetings and welcome to today's Massachusetts Institute of Technology Math Jam!
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 19:31:20
Before I introduce our special guests, I would like to briefly explain our classroom to those who have not previously attended a Math Jam or online class.
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 19:31:55
This classroom is moderated. This means that the messages you type will come to the moderators rather than going directly into the room. The moderators may choose some of the messages and questions to share with all of the participants.
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 19:32:02
Only the moderators have the ability to send private messages in the classroom. Sometimes they will use these to privately respond to your comments.
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 19:32:17
There are likely to be a lot of questions. Please be patient -- the moderators will be answering questions as quickly as they can, but it may take some time for them to get to yours. Also, your question may not necessarily be selected to be answered; please do not take this personally, as we only have a finite amount of time and there may be a lot of questions, so some may not get taken. Please only ask your question once.
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 19:32:57
In addition, there may be a delay between when your question appears and when it is answered -- please be patient and give our guests time to type in thorough answers. Please don't ask your question repeatedly; they'll get to it!
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 19:33:03
Now let me introduce our special guests from MIT.
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 19:33:16
Matt McGann is the Associate Director of Admissions at MIT. Not only is Matt one of the people who reads applications and decides who is admitted, he is also an MIT alumnus (class of 2000), so he can likely answer a lot of your questions about undergraduate life at MIT. Matt's home page is http://www.mitadmissions.org/Matt.shtml.
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 19:33:28
Kiran Kedlaya is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at MIT. His research is in arithmetic algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory. Prof. Kedlaya is a former IMO medalist (several times), a Putnam winner (several times) and serves on the AoPS Foundation Board of Directors. His home page is http://www.mit.edu/~kedlaya/.
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 19:33:43
At this time I will turn the floor over to Matt and Kiran.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:33:46
Good evening! Thanks for coming out to the 6th annual MIT Math Jam on AOPS. I'm glad you could make it.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:33:54
Prof. Kedlaya & I will begin fielding questions in just a moment. (format: Name / Grade / State-or-Country: Question; e.g. Matt / 12 / NY: How awesome is MIT?)
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:34:00
First, note that over the course of the past 5 years, Prof. Kedlaya & I have answered many questions. The answer to one of your questions may be in a previous Math Jam transcript:

Also, it is worth noting that the MIT website http://web.mit.edu, the MIT Admissions website http://www.mitadmissions.org, and the MIT Math Department site http://math.mit.edu/ will have the answers to many of your questions. Since the inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, is a professor at MIT, we are required to have websites with lots of information.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:34:54
I should also note that an MIT math student, Kate (AOPS sn: k8reindeer), would be happy to field questions on her blog:
http://www.mitadmissions.org/k8r_.shtml
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:35:02
Again, Prof. Kedlaya and I will begin taking questions in just a moment (format: Name / Grade / State-or-Country: Question; e.g. Matt / 12 / NY: How awesome is MIT?). But first, I'd like to tell you a few things about MIT, as well as its math department.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:35:11
The basics: MIT is an analytically-focused university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. It is well known for its academics and research in biology, engineering, physics, math, economics, and architecture, among other disciplines.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:35:17
A typical freshman class is about 1100 students, so there will be about 4400 total undergraduates. About 55% of students are male and 45% are female; the largest represented state is California. Students come from all 50 states and over 80 countries.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:35:23
The math department is pretty exciting. The many, many clases are taught by some of the top math faculty in the world. Most students will do math (or other) research during their time as an undergraduate.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:35:35
Also, I don't have any good way to back this up, but I believe that MIT has more International Math Olympiad medalists in its undergraduate student body than any university in the world. However, most MIT math undergraduates don't come in with any such distinction; a pretty fair number of math students have never even heard of the AMC.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:35:42
In a field like math that can be male-dominated, I think that MIT is one of the best places to study math as an undergraduate woman. Over each of the past three years, an MIT student has won the Schafer Prize, awarded to the top female math student studying in the United States.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:35:50
About admissions: last year, we admitted about 10% of the 16,632 students who applied. There is no formula or secret to admissions. We look for students who are well matched with MIT's culture and mission in a holistic admissions process.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:35:56
We certainly look for students with good grades in challenging classes as well as strong test scores, but beyond that we are also looking for students who...
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:36:02
...are excited about learning and discovery, are interested in solving new, challenging problems, like to collaborate with others, take initiative, appreciate the humanities and arts, and are involved with their communities beyond the classroom doing things they enjoy.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:36:08
We can answer more questions about MIT life, math, admissions, or anything else.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:36:14
I'd like to meet you with your question, so if you could preface your question with your name, grade, and location, that would be great.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:36:19
For example:
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:36:25
Matt / 12 / NY: How awesome is MIT?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:36:35
Please be patient; we will get to as many questions as we can.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:36:48
Anything to add, Prof. Kedlaya, before we begin?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 19:37:08
You pretty much said it all, Matt.
kedlaya 2010-10-05 19:37:40
Let's dive right into the questions.
kimt9 2010-10-05 19:38:20
Kim, 4th grade, Missouri, USA : Do you have any tips in how to get into MIT?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:38:22
Kim: For now, concentrate on doing well in school and being involved with things you enjoy. If math is something you enjoy, AOPS is a great place to be. But for the next 7 years or so, I would focus on doing thing you enjoy and not worry so much about college admissions!
ahaanomegas 2010-10-05 19:40:52
(Ahaan / 11 / FL) What kind of questions is asked during the interview for the admission process?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:40:54
The MIT interview is a chat with a trained MIT graduate in your home area (we don't do interviews on campus). Unlike interviews for, say, Oxford or Cambridge, the MIT interview will not have any math questions. We will mostly try to get to know you, hwo you think, what you enjoy, where you see yourself in the future. No tricky or political questions. It's like an oral essay to complement your written essay, in some ways.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:41:46
If you are applying to MIT this year, you will find the name of your MIT interviewer on your application website: http://my.mit.edu. It is your responsibility to schedule your interview prior to the application deadline.

nickname 2010-10-05 19:43:45
Nicholas / 10 / Ontario, Canada: How does the application process differ for international students? Do you have any advice/comments for international students, in particular those from Canada?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:43:48
The international admissions process is mostly the same. We use the same application and will still treat every application in a need blind fashion, and meet every student's full financial need. There is onyl one deadline for international students: January 1. I should note that MIT asks us to have each year's class to be onyl 8% international each year; as such, it is harder to be admitted as an international student.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:44:55
We have interviewers throughout Canada (esp. Ontario, where you are), and will still require standardized tests, teacher recommendations, etc. We are familiar with Canadian transcripts (e.g. we know the different grading system) and how Canadian schools differ from US schools.

batter8642 2010-10-05 19:45:20
Alejandro/ 7th Grade/ Puerto Rico, USA: Are there online courses from MIT?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 19:45:22
Alejandro: MIT does not run online courses per se, but they have archived a great deal of course material and made it available to the public through the OpenCourseWare project. You might use these to get some idea of what MIT courses are like.
kedlaya 2010-10-05 19:45:43
You can even see a few of my past courses there!
Sami21 2010-10-05 19:46:41
Sami / 13 / IL: Which courses in high school would be beneficial to getting admitted to MIT?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:46:43
Math through calculus. 4 years of science, including one or more at an advanced level (e.g. AP, IB) if available. 4 years of English. Social studies/history. Foreign Language. Other things you enjoy (for example, if you like music, go for it!).
sachima 2010-10-05 19:46:54
Diane/16/CT: Would you say that MIT has a particularly strong linguistics department? I know Noam Chomsky was once professor there, and that's one field I'm very interested in studying.
kedlaya 2010-10-05 19:46:55
Diane: MIT indeed has one of the strongest linguistics departments around. It's a popular subject among those with math and computer science interests, as there are a number of similarities.
csl824 2010-10-05 19:47:58
Carmela/12/Philippines. How do I submit the teachers' recommendations and school records? thanks
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:47:59
MIT requires two letters of recommendation from teachers: one math or science, and one humanities. You can download the teacher form at the application website, http://my.mit.edu. You can also download a trascript form there. You should mail these to MIT at the address provided.
number.sense 2010-10-05 19:48:12
Nik, 10th, CA: Are we allowed to declare different majors for different schools? For instance, may I declare my major as Computer Science to University A, but then declare my major as mathematics for MIT?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 19:48:14
Nik: At MIT and most other US universities, students don't have to declare their major when they apply. At MIT, students typically choose their major at the end of their first year, although they can switch later. Many do switch later, or add a second major as their interests develop.
greenhornet12 2010-10-05 19:50:52
Ben/11th grade/IL, USA: How many freshmen are involved with UROP's during their freshmen year or in the summer after?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 19:50:53
Ben: Many students participate in UROP (undergraduate research) projects even during their freshman year. I've personally supervised several UROP projects with students in their first or second years. In the math department, besides arranging UROP projects with individual faculty members, students can also apply for the SPUR summer program, in which they are matched with a graduate student mentor and work closely with that person for a few weeks.
hutian 2010-10-05 19:51:10
Emily/11/TX: Is MIT going to have a cafeteria soon?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:51:12
Emily, no need to worry about food. You'll be able to choose from a number of dormitories that offer a full dining hall, including breakfast and dinner. For example, the dorm I lived in, Baker House, has a beautiful dining hall. And this coming year, the beautiful Maseeh Hall will open with a top-of-the-line dining hall for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It will be sweet!
wiggly 2010-10-05 19:52:56
Simon /12 / UK: How would you compare an MIT education in mathematics to one from Oxford or Cambridge?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:52:58
Hi Simon, that's a good and interesting question. I would say the biggest difference is that at Oxbridge, you would study *only* math. At MIT, while you would major in math, you would also get to take classes in science, humanities, arts, and more. (Note that MIT and Cambridge do have an exchange program: http://web.mit.edu/cmi/ue/ )
OneShotSniper 2010-10-05 19:53:07
Youngseok Kim/11/NY : I heard that new dorm rooms are opened next year, Does that going to affect the admission rate? (Although I am going to apply at 2012)
kedlaya 2010-10-05 19:53:09
Youngseok: I think you heard about the new Masseh Hall which is opening on campus. The net effect will be that the total undergraduate enrollment will go up by about 5% (to 4500 students in all four years), although I'm not sure exactly how that will be phased in (maybe Matt knows better).
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:54:35
Youngseok: The admission rate, of course, depends on both a numerator (the # of students we admit) and a denominator (the # of students who apply). I can't predict/control the denominator, but the numerator will increase this year, by ~100 students.
kedlaya 2010-10-05 19:55:12
To follow up on Simon's question: at MIT, you are not only *able* to take courses other than math, it is in fact *required*. MIT expects its students to graduate with some fundamental mastery of math, chemistry, physics, and biology, plus some exposure to different areas in the humanities (music, theater, literature, history, etc.), and requires students to take a number of courses in those areas. That should still leave plenty of time for math, or whatever your primary subject is.
hasan4444 2010-10-05 19:55:48
Hassan / 12 / Saudi Arabia: Is it true than you only take the math score out of SAT I for international students? Along with TOEFL.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:55:49
For international students (all students, actually), we require one of {SAT, ACT, TOEFL}, one SAT Subject Test in math, and one SAT subject test in science.
Jerry_Zhang 2010-10-05 19:56:33
Jerry/16/PA How does MIT look at SAT scores (does it look at single tests, or the highest score on each category from all tests)
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:56:35
We will look at the highest score in each section.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:56:43
More on testing requirements: http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/standardized_test_requirements/index.shtml
Osud2 2010-10-05 19:57:19
Christina/19 (grad student)/Los Angeles: When I was in high school, the teachers and college counselors were adamant that top tier univerities would not admit students who had not played a team sport. Is this true? Have you ever not admitted someone because they didn't play sports?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:57:21
Not true. While MIT does field 33 competitive varsity sports, I would guess that most students we admit haven't played a varsity sport.
PLung 2010-10-05 19:57:52
Patrick / 11 / Canada: Does MIT offer need-based or merit-based scholarships for international students?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:57:53
MIT meets the full financial need of all students, foreign or domestic.
william22 2010-10-05 19:57:55
William, Grade 11, Canada: If I take courses in local university during my high school years, will the credits still be effective if I can get into MIT?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 19:57:56
William: only to a limited degree. You can typically get one year's worth of credit ("sophomore standing") for courses taken outside of MIT, including AP courses and transfer credits from a local university. Beyond that, you may not be able to transfer credits, but you may be able to get placement credit for courses you took elsewhere (e.g., to satisfy a graduation requirement, or to fulfill the prerequisite for a more advanced course).
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:59:35
Hi Giri, MIT offers many study abroad, research abroad, and internship abroad programs. For study abroad, the most prominent program is the exchange with Cambridge University I mentioned earlier. There are also programs with places like Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, the Technion in Israel, universities in Singapore, Madrid, and more. See http://web.mit.edu/studyabroad/
giriduh 2010-10-05 19:59:39
Giri / 10 / MA: Does MIT have a foreign exchange program?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 19:59:55
(See above ^^^^^^^^^ )
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:00:38
Also, there are some very cool research and internship abroad programs. The umbrella for most of these is called MISTI. http://web.mit.edu/MISTI/
brianlee89 2010-10-05 20:01:11
Hey Matt/Kiran, I'm a senior/course 5 at MIT now. Saw this and thought I might drop by.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:01:12
Hi Brian! Course 5 is Chemistry, FYI. All of the majors at MIT have numbers. Math is 18.
Tomkitty 2010-10-05 20:02:14
Grant / 12 / UT: How would you rate MIT's social environment compared to other first tier schools? It's bound to have some intraveverted recluses, but what percentages of the student body includes these people?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:02:15
Grant: MIT is a lot more social than you might expect. My experience is that most students arriving at MIT find that it's a more comfortable environment than they are used to, perhaps because they aren't stigmatized for being a "nerd" like they may have been in high school. On the contrary, at MIT they're surrounded by people for whom being a "nerd" isn't a negative quality at all!
mathwiz314 2010-10-05 20:02:48
Wayne/10/Florida: How much does affirmative action factor into the MIT application process?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:02:50
MIT is an affirmative action school, but don't count on that getting you in. We are proud to have a diverse campus, and also proud that we don't lower the bar for anyone: legacies, athletes, etc.
Jerry_Zhang 2010-10-05 20:03:39
Jerry/16/PA do you select your major/field of study when applying?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:03:40
Jerry: you only select your major after your first year, unless you have enough transfer credits to take early sophomore standing (in which case you choose after your first semester).
jing 2010-10-05 20:04:33
Jingwen/ 12/ Ontario, Canada: when should we start on the application process to MIT and how long do you think this process takes?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:04:36
Students shoudl begin the application process in the fall of their final year of high school (so, now for seniors). I do recommend that juniors take standardized tests in the spring (SAT or ACT or TOEFL, and the 2 SAT Subject Tests)
The-Pi-Avenger 2010-10-05 20:05:26
Chan-Soo/10/CA: Does MIT offer any summer programs that are available for high schoolers this year?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:05:26
Chan-Soo: there are a number of high school programs running at MIT each summer. The most prominent is probably the RSI (Research Science Institute) program, which is normally open to students between 11th and 12nd grades. Many top finishers in the Siemens and Intel competitions come out of the RSI program, particulary among the math projects.
Benl 2010-10-05 20:06:32
Ben/15/IL: How are your offerings for someone who'd like to continue music in band (particularly oboe).
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:06:33
Ben: MIT has a number of music groups, including the Wind Ensemble which might be relevant in your case. You can even get some course credit for participating in some groups.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:06:36
I've been told that by the middle of freshman year, a third of students are already doing research, and by the time sophomore year starts, most are involved. Research isn't just for special people at MIT -- everyone gets involved with research.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:06:49
(I think a question about research got eaten??)
prithvi2206 2010-10-05 20:07:57
Prithvi Ramakrishnan/ 12/ Trinidad and Tobago/ When is the best time to apply and schedule an interview for an international applicant (because Early Action is not applicable)
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:07:59
You can schedule an interview now, and start working on the application now. You don't need to wait until the last minute. I would say you should be well into the process by November.
SonyWii 2010-10-05 20:08:49
Surya / 10 / MA: If one took various courses at acclaimed universities, say Harvard Extension School, what are admissions officers' initial opinions/thoughts? Is it more of, "oh, this is pretty common, bleh" or is it "Oh look, this guy likes math, and is doing this advanced stuff"?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:08:51
Surya: Taking university-level courses is certainly one way to indicate that you're strongly interested in math (or another subject). It's not all that unusual among the population of students we're looking at, but it's still nice to see students taking initiative like that.
Roger123 2010-10-05 20:09:02
Vinni/14/California: If I were to get one B, can I forget about getting into MIT?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:09:05
No. You do not need to be a perfect student to be admitted. Many students we admit have multiple Bs. I do hope that every student who applies has *mostly* As in a mostly rigorous curriculum.
Sami21 2010-10-05 20:10:29
Sami / 13 / IL: What kinds of scholarships are offered at MIT?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:10:30
We offer extensive need-based scholarships to everyone who qualifies, which is most students. We will also meet full financial need. The average scholarship last year (per student, per year) was about $31,000, I think. We do not offer any merit scholarships, 2400 scholarships, good-at-throwing-a-ball scholarships, or anything like that.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:10:45
More info: http://web.mit.edu/sfs/financial_aid/index.html
JSGandora 2010-10-05 20:11:19
Jason / 8 / NJ: By "things you enjoy", do you look for diversity (such as math and basketball)?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:11:20
That's great. I think it's cool that the MIT basketball team can do calculus and can also dunk.
AneeshA 2010-10-05 20:12:15
Aneesh/10/MA: Does MIT consider sports, arts, or volunteer service a bigger factor in the admissions process?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:12:16
All of those things would be considered. Do what you enjoy; don't do any of those things just to please an admissions officer.
footballer 2010-10-05 20:12:45
Alan/8/NY, what is the female to male student ratio in MIT? Is it true that it is easier for girls to get into MIT than boys?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:12:46
The male:female ratio is 55:45. It is not easier for boys or girls to be admitted.
bokagadha 2010-10-05 20:13:16
Soumya/12/CA: How many students are typically in a class? Are there any exceptions to that? Also, is there a minimum class size?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:13:17
Soumya: class sizes vary quite a lot. The required freshman courses (like calculus, physics, chemistry, biology) are taught in lectures of several hundred students, but also include recitations which are taught in smaller units. (In math, recitations are 20-30 students each, and are usually run by advanced graduate students, postdocs, or sometimes by faculty members.) Advanced courses in a subject are usually much smaller, possibly as few as 5-10 students.

Giri / 10 / MA: Are we expected to be particularly strong in one non-core subject (ex. electrical engineering) by the end of high school?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:14:59
Giri: some MIT students come in with a strong background in one subject, others with a more level background across multiple subjects. That said, it's generally a good thing if you can demonstrate some passion about something in particular, be it an academic subject or some other activity.
LotharCollatz 2010-10-05 20:15:45
Karan / 11 / Canada : I've heard that students at MIT can do courses at Harvard if a similar course is not offered at MIT, and vice versa. HOw does this work?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:15:47
It's pretty easy. We have cross registration with Harvard as well as Wellesley, MassArt, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. There's very little bureaucracy; if you want to take the course, in most cases you'll do so with no problem.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:16:11
I took a class at Harvard for cross registration. I just needed the professor's signature, which she gladly provided.

Vishal/13/CA What is the jump from olympiad level math to undergraduate courses at MIT?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:17:16
Vishal: I don't think the jump is too serious. The main challenge in undergraduate math courses is getting used to proofs, but from Olympiad math you are probably comfortable with them already. By the way, we do offer one "competition" class: a freshman seminar organized around the Putnam competition (in which MIT has been extraordinarily successful of late).

Bowei / 16/ TN: Does MIT consider the enviornment of the student? Geographically, economically?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:17:43
Yes. Context is crucial. We will consider your opportunities as well as your challenges. This is a key part of our admissions process.

Sahana/ 9th grade/ CA: Does MIT have a required senior thesis? If you double major, do you have to do senior thesis on both?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:18:13
Sahana: most subjects at MIT do not have a required senior thesis. For instance, math does not have a senior thesis; the only math undergraduate thesis I ever supervised was a joint math/computer science student.

Most students who have at least a B average (which is most students) will be admitted. Each department can choose their own students, but nearly every student in good academic standing will get to go if they want.

Prithvi Ramakrishnan/ 12/ Trinidad and Tobago/ In your opinion, what is an example of a good way to combine passions for math and biology?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:23:28

Karan/ 11 / Canada : Can students get credit for IB courses at MIT?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:25:13
Karan: MIT doesn't have any courses analogous to Harvard's Math 55 (advanced multivariable calculus + linear algebra + anything goes!). Freshmen at MIT are encouraged to start with whatever course they are prepared for: calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, or even more advanced courses (real analysis, abstract algebra).

Chan-Soo: If you mean by undergraduates, they get to do research projects in almost every subject at MIT through UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program). This includes plenty of laboratory and engineering subjects, but there are UROP projects in math also. I should know, I've supervised at least a dozen of them over the years.

MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:29:05
That's fine. We will consider every student in their context. At your school, the "scholars" courses are the hard courses, and we will consider that accordingly.
AlphaBetaTheta 2010-10-05 20:29:32
Vishal/13/USA Are international math olympiad qualifiers and winners usually admitted to MIT?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:29:33
Vishal: IMO participation is not a guarantee of admission to MIT (no such guarantee exists!) but it is definitely something we take into account. I think MIT pays more attention to things like IMO than many other schools, partly because we have someone in admissions (Matt) who knows how significant an accomplishment it is to qualify for or medal at the IMO.

kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:31:23
Sahana: in some cases (like one-variable calculus), you can use an AP exam result to place out of a required course. In some other cases (like multivariable calculus), to place out of a required course you have to pass an exam that is offered at the start of the academic year (during freshman orientation).

kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:35:15
Nik: The important thing is that we get some feedback about your work. Taking classes for a grade does that, but if you're auditing classes instead, you could get one of the instructors to write a letter of recommendation.

MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:36:05
No HS quota. We will admit the students who are good for MIT. Our process is not based around comparing students from the same HS against each other. (TJ is a pretty cool place, btw)

Sitan/11/GA: How does double majoring work at MIT?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:39:42
Sitan: This process has recently gotten much simpler. Nowadays, to do a double major, it is enough to satisfy the general Institute graduation requirements (two semesters of physics, two of math, etc.) and the individual requirements of the two majors. Often these requirements overlap, because many departments (like math) leave you some flexibility in choosing courses, and if you need to you can choose courses that also count for physics, or computer science, or whatnot.

No. We don't calculate or recalculate. We will mostly be looking at the individual course choices and the grades in those courses rather than a summary statistic like GPA.
LotharCollatz 2010-10-05 20:49:12
Karan/ 11/ Canada: If a student were to come from an area with little oppertunitiy for internships etc. , would you take that into consideration during the admissions process?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:49:14
Yes
suhuawang 2010-10-05 20:50:11
Derek / 10 / TX : How important is class rank? For example, in a class of 700 or so, how high up would you have to be to be "considered"?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:50:12
HS rankings work in different ways. For example, at some HS if you take music your rank will go down, which is sad. As such, we will mostly be looking at the individual course choices and the grades in those courses rather than a summary statistic like rank.
dragonx 2010-10-05 20:50:14
Aishvar/14/VA What do the students mostly do in their free time apart from studying?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:50:15
Aishvar: there are lots of student activities on campus (art, music, sports, cultural). MIT students have a reputation for putting a lot of energy not just into their classes but also into their extracurricular activities (including some of the more offbeat ones, like staging elaborate pranks or "hacks").
Sami21 2010-10-05 20:50:36
Sami / 13 / IL: Does MIT consider ACT scores too?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:50:38
Yes. You can take SAT, ACT, or TOEFL.
MMPC39 2010-10-05 20:50:49
Alan/11/MI: Does MIT have a competing Quiz Bowl Team?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:50:50
Yes, I was on it!
LotharCollatz 2010-10-05 20:51:08
Karan / 11 / Canada: Does MIT have a debate team?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:51:09
Yes, they are very good!
Math Geek 2010-10-05 20:51:43
Sitan/11/GA: Sorry, I asked this question previously, but I don't think it was answered. Does the teacher writing the letter of recommendation have to be a teacher from my own school, or can it be a university professor I know well?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:51:44
I would recommend your recommendations be from teachers at your school, but a professor could write a supplemental letter.
supersweet 2010-10-05 20:52:09
shiyu/11/MI: I didn't get my answer: do non-Green Card holders apply from the "international students pool"?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:52:10
Domestic students have US citizenship or a green card. Everyone else is considered international.
The-Pi-Avenger 2010-10-05 20:52:11
Chan-Soo/10/CA: Is it possible to go to a 2-year college and transfer to MIT for the 3rd year?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:52:12
Chan-Soo: yes in principle, but transfer admission is *very* selective.
jackandraka 2010-10-05 20:52:49
How do you view high middle school achievments such as SSP, Young Scientist, and Mathcounts
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:52:51
We will mostly focus on HS things, but MS enrichment is good for your education.
jing 2010-10-05 20:53:19
Jingwen/12/Ontario, Canada: Would you say that the life science programs leading to a career in medicine are a particular forte at MIT, despite the emphasis on the physical sciences (math, physics, cs, etc)?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:53:21
MIT has arguably the best biology program in the US (See the new NRC rankings).
Jasmine8925 2010-10-05 20:54:05
do you care about geographic diversity? would it be easier to get in for someone from the west coast than someone on the east coast?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:54:06
Nope. Actually, we have more students at MIT from California than anywhere else!
ktz2014 2010-10-05 20:54:22
Kamran/9/Tennessee: Has Mr. McGann ever qualified for the USAMO?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:54:23
No.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:54:34
But Dr. Kedlaya rocked it multiple times.
OneShotSniper 2010-10-05 20:55:00
(Youngseok Kim/11th grade-Junior/NY/USA) What is the average Subject test range?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:55:05
Lots of test score stats here:http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/admissions_statistics/index.shtml
Potential5 2010-10-05 20:55:30
Bhaskar/11/PA: How is MIT for theoretical physics and math; are there research opportunities in those fields for undergraduates?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:55:31
Yes. Many many many opportunities.
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:55:41
Kamran: many students (not just MOP/IMO participants) test out of both one-variable and multivariable calculus. The placement exams are offered at the start of the academic year. It is possible to test out of higher subjects (like differential equations) but it's more difficult: you have to submit some problem sets in addition to passing the placement exam.
ktz2014 2010-10-05 20:55:44
Kamran/9/Tennessee: If you have gone to MOP and maybe IMO, could you skip test out of the caluclus classes and even some higher level math courses?
mathwiz314 2010-10-05 20:55:46
Wayne/10/Florida: Are there any state quotas for admission?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:55:47
Not at all. Many Floridians here.
rd5493 2010-10-05 20:56:19
Rocky/12/WV: Does MIT take into account whether or not you have visited the campus when reviewing your application? I have heard this used as an excuse for denail.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:56:20
Not at MIT. Admissions at MIT does not use "demonstrated interest."
kostya 2010-10-05 20:56:41
Kostya / 12 / PA: Does MIT look more favorably upon other international olympiads, such as the IChO, than other comparable schools?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:56:42
I can't speak for other schools, but we love the IChO.
tonypr 2010-10-05 20:57:00
Anthony/11/Puerto Rico: Are other international math competitions, like the Centro American Math Olympiad or the Ibero American Math Olympiad, taken into account as well?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 20:57:01
Anthony: yes! MIT admits students from all over the world, and we factor in whatever Olympiad-style contests are appropriate for your location.
MathDork135 2010-10-05 20:57:09
Shirley/11/Pa: Are canadians considered international students?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:57:10
Yes. We don't think of Canada as the 51st state!
kdog 2010-10-05 20:57:25
Keyur/12/PA: How much does the achievement of an Eagle Scout rank in boy scouts contribute to admission at MIT?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:57:27
It would be considered.
jjx1 2010-10-05 20:58:35
Andrew/15/WI: It says you recommend 4 years of math, but I have a dilemma. At the end of Junior year, I will have taken all math classes available at my high school( highest is AP Calculus BC) and will nly have 3 years of math. The only option I have is going to UW-Madison to take a math class, but it is very inconvenient for my schedule. What should I do?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:58:36
You don't need to do things not offered at your school. I know going to the university can be time consuming. (You can consider EPGY, CTY, or AOPS if you like, though)
number.sense 2010-10-05 20:58:57
Nik, 10, CA: By the end of this year, I will be done with Latin 4AP. Should I take another foreign language after this, or is it okay if I stop?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:58:58
You can stop if you like, at least for MIT.
skanmath 2010-10-05 20:59:29
Sandy/10/PA: Does HCSIM count in one of those math camps you mentioned.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:59:30
Sure, I visited there this summer, too!
jackandraka 2010-10-05 20:59:47
Is it okay if your dont play any sports or musical instruments
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 20:59:48
Yes. But I hope you're doing more than just playing XBOX!
The-Pi-Avenger 2010-10-05 21:00:05
Chan-Soo/10/CA: How do you accomodate ADA students? Are they at a disadvantage?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 21:00:05
Chan-Soo: There is an office on campus that certifies ADA disabilities, and those students can request appropriate accommodations (e.g., extra time for exams).
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:00:31
FYI: We've been going strong for 90 minutes, and will need to wrap up soon...
kedlaya 2010-10-05 21:00:42
Yes, maybe just a couple more questions.
stellaffaith 2010-10-05 21:01:23
Stella/12/CT: Sorry to post this again, but I do need the answer: Is it required for non-native speakers to take a foreign language in high school? (English is their second language......) Thank you.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:01:25
Not required.
jjx1 2010-10-05 21:01:49
Andrew/15/WI Does MIT take legacy into account?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:01:50
We do not have a legacy preference.
mathq 2010-10-05 21:01:55
Daniel/10/ON : I am interested in doing math major, do professors help you say in research or a project? in other words, do teachers devote their time on you?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 21:01:55
Daniel: to some extent it's up to you. Many professors (like me) are willing to supervise research projects, but typically it's up to the student to ask first.
jackandraka 2010-10-05 21:02:05
Do you prefer excentric languages like Turkish over common languages such as Spanish
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:02:07
No.
number.sense 2010-10-05 21:02:50
Nik, 10, CA: I don't think that this was answered: I have finished Calculus BC, Multivariable Calculus, and Differential equations. This fall, I will be doing group theory with AOPS. But after that, what do you reccomend?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:02:52
Oy, I don't know! Maybe some independent research? MIT OpenCourseWare? <http://ocw.mit.edu> Course at a local college?
Maria543 2010-10-05 21:03:21
Maria/12/fl: is physics required for admission?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:03:22
Not technically required, but we strongly recommend it. Sometimes students who are doing IB or A Level don't have it, for example.
Math-Open 2010-10-05 21:03:26
shir/9/usa: what's the career outlook for a math student graduating from MIT?
kedlaya 2010-10-05 21:03:27
Shir: Math students from MIT have a lot of options. Some go on to graduate study in math (at all of the top schools: Harvard, Princeton, and of course MIT!). Others do graduate work in physics, computer science, biology, etc. Others go into finance, IT...
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 21:03:50
Others work for AoPS :)
SonyWii 2010-10-05 21:04:36
Surya / 10 / MA: Will you be willing to answer questions via email outside of this math jam?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:04:36
I do take questions at my blog, and will try to answer questions in the AOPS college forum.
gogators 2010-10-05 21:04:54
Will a transcript of this be available?
Complex_Ninja 2010-10-05 21:04:54
Ritvik/12/Canada: Is writing national math olympiads taken into consideration, or is it only the international one?
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:04:55
Yes!
kedlaya 2010-10-05 21:04:55
Ritvik: Yes! How you did in the qualification process for your country's IMO team is also a factor.
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 21:05:15
I will be putting the transcript up shortly after this ends.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:05:16
I mean, yes, there will be a transcript available.
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:05:47
Thank you all for coming, this was lots of fun!
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:05:55
Sorry we couldn't get to all of your questions!
MattMcGannMIT 2010-10-05 21:06:09
(There were lots more I would have loved to answer...)
kedlaya 2010-10-05 21:06:10
Yes, there were plenty of excellent questions, far more than we could answer.
rrusczyk 2010-10-05 21:06:13
Thanks much to Matt and Kiran!
