Welcome to the MIT Math Jam!  We are very fortunate to have Matt McGann,  Associate Director of Admissions at MIT, and Kiran Kedlaya, math professor at MIT (and former US IMO team member) here tonight to tell us all about life and admissions at MIT.
rrusczyk 2011-10-13 19:29:59
Before we get started, I have a quick note about this classroom.  This room is moderated, which means that all your comments come to the instructors.  We may share your comments with the whole room if we so choose.  Matt will let you know when it's time to start asking questions.
rrusczyk 2011-10-13 19:30:07
Now, I'll turn the floor over to Matt and Kiran.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:30:34
Good evening! Thanks for coming out to the 7th (!) annual MIT Math Jam on AOPS. I'm glad you could make it.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:30:45
Prof. Kedlaya & I will begin fielding questions in just a moment. (format: Name / Grade / State-or-Country: Question; e.g. Matt / 12th grade / NY: How awesome is MIT?)
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:30:56
First, note that over the course of the past 6 MIT Math Jams we've done, Prof. Kedlaya & I have answered many questions. The answer to one of your questions may be in a previous Math Jam transcript:
http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/School/mathjams.php?past=1
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:31:09
Also, it is worth noting that the MIT website http://web.mit.edu, the MIT Admissions website http://www.mitadmissions.org, and the MIT Math Department site http://math.mit.edu/ will have the answers to many of your questions. Since the inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, is a professor at MIT, we are required to have websites with lots of information.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:31:19
This Math Jam will last one hour, during which Prof. Kedlaya and I will take as many questions as we can -- but that is usually only a fraction of the questions that are asked.  I apologize if we cannot get to your question.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:31:31
Again, Prof. Kedlaya and I will begin taking questions in just a moment (format: Name / Grade / State-or-Country: Question; e.g. Matt / 12th grade / NY: How awesome is MIT?). But first, I'd like to tell you a few things about MIT, as well as its math department.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:31:40
The basics: MIT is an analytically-focused university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. It is well known for its academics and research in biology, engineering, physics, math, economics, and architecture, among other disciplines.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:31:56
A typical incoming freshman class is about 1100 students, so there will be about 4400 total undergraduates. About 54% of students are male and 46% are female; the largest represented state is California. Students come from all 50 states and over 80 countries.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:32:09
For those of you interested in majoring in math -- the math department is pretty exciting. The many, many clases are taught by some of the top math faculty in the world. Most students will do math (or other) research during their time as an undergraduate. Prof. Kedlaya can tell you more about the department during the chat.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:32:18
Also, I don't have any good way to back this up, but I believe that MIT has more International Math Olympiad medalists in its undergraduate student body than any university in the world. However, most MIT math undergraduates don't come in with any such distinction; a pretty fair number of math students have never even heard of the AMC.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:32:28
In a field like math that can be male-dominated, I think that MIT is one of the best places to study math as an undergraduate woman. Over each of the past five years, an MIT student has either won or been a runner up/homorable mention for the Schafer Prize, awarded to the top female math student studying in the United States.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:32:39
About admissions: last year, we admitted about 10% of the 17,909 students who applied. There is no formula or secret to admissions. We look for students who are well matched with MIT's culture and mission in a holistic admissions process.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:32:47
We certainly look for students with good grades in challenging classes as well as strong test scores, but beyond that we are also looking for students who...
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:32:59
...are excited about learning and discovery, are interested in solving new, challenging problems, like to collaborate with others, take initiative, appreciate the humanities and arts, and are involved with their communities beyond the classroom doing things they enjoy.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:33:10
We can answer more questions about MIT life, math, admissions, or anything else.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:33:16
I'd like to meet you with your question, so if you could preface your question with your name, grade, and location, that would be great.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:33:23
For example:
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:33:28
Matt / 12th grade / NY: How awesome is MIT?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:33:35
Please be patient; we will get to as many questions as we can.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:33:41
Anything to add, Prof. Kedlaya, before we begin?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:34:35
As usual, you've done a great job setting the scene, so nothing for me to add except to again encourage everyone to start asking great questions!
MathcountWinner1 2011-10-13 19:34:53
Dylan/12th grade/AR/Do you prefer ACT or SAT?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:34:56
Hi Dylan, We honestly have no preference between the ACT Plus Writing and the SAT Reasoning Test.  Note that all students also must take 2 SAT Subject Tests, one in math and one in science.
frignr 2011-10-13 19:35:56
Seung/11th/MD: How important is the class rank in the MIT admissions?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:35:58
Hi Seung, Class rank is not very important.  However, taking a challenging courseload and having good grades definitely is.
omega1 2011-10-13 19:37:29
Natasha/10th/New York:I know that MIT requires four years of math...my school is letting me do all 4 years in just 2 years (9th & 10th in 9th grade and 11th & 12th in 10th grade). If I go to Colombia University for the other two years (advanced math classes), will that fulfill my required math?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:37:30
Yes.
VIPMaster 2011-10-13 19:38:09
Sree / 12 / MA: If I'm taking an AoPS class this year, would the "Additional Classes" section of the application be an appropriate place to list it?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:38:11
The "Math" section of the Self-Reported Coursework would be best, "Additional CLasses" also works.
number.sense 2011-10-13 19:38:19
Nikhil/11th grade/CA: What percentage of MIT classes are taught by full-time faculty?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:38:20
Nikhil: at least in the math department, all classes are taught by full-time faculty (either permanent faculty or postdoctoral instructors). A few initial classes like calculus are taught in a lecture/recitation format, where the faculty member lectures to a large class, and then students meet in smaller sections with a recitation instructor. The recitation instructor might be a graduate student, postdoc, or another faculty member. For anything more advanced, you get smaller classes taught exclusively by faculty and postdocs.
chengp 2011-10-13 19:39:49
What about subject tests in other subjects?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:39:54
We neither require nor consider other subject tests byond the required math and science tests.
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:41:16
Natasha: MIT does not actually require 4 years of math. What is required for all students is one-variable and multivariable calculus, but you can place out of these classes by taking an exam at the beginning of your first year. Of course, math majors will take many more math courses, but most other majors also require a bit more math (typically differential equations or linear algebra). You may be able to place out of these also and then proceed directly to more advanced courses.
scoconut26 2011-10-13 19:42:01
Srishti/8th Grade/MA: How many majors are there to choose from?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:42:03
Many! See the list at http://mitadmissions.org/discover/majors
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:42:43
(sorry, I'm not sure what happened to Natasha's question, but it was roughly about transferring college courses taken in high school)
danzhu 2011-10-13 19:43:24
Victor / grade 10 / Winnipeg, Canada: how many canadians get in every year? Is it more expensive?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:43:26
A bunch of Canadians are admitted each year; there is no quota or expected number.  Because we are need blind in admissions and meet full financial need for all students, it is not more expensive, and often students are provided generous need-based scholarships that makes MIT extremely affordable.
theprince 2011-10-13 19:44:47
Daniel/ 11th grade/ FL: For SAT subject tests, if we were to declare a major, say chemistry, would we have to have taken the SAT 2 chemistry?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:44:49
No, you can take any math and any science subject test. We don't admit by major
mario123 2011-10-13 19:45:08
Kevin/10/Massachusetts/USA, Does making MOP highly increase your chances of being accepted?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:45:11
Kevin: Making MOP is certainly a great accomplishment, and the admissions office does keep track of that as well as many other factors. This sort of tracking is one thing that MIT in general (and Matt in particular!) seem to be much better at than our peer schools, and it has helped us develop quite a strong body of math undergraduates!
AIME15 2011-10-13 19:45:57
Eugene / 10th grade / California: What is MIT's policy on admitting students applying during junior year (skipping senior year of high school)?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:45:59
That's fine by us.  That's what I did.  Ideally, your decision to do so will be supported by your school, family, and teachers. We admit students like this each year.
PChang 2011-10-13 19:46:57
Wooje/10th grade/NJ/Is it better to take as many math and science course, instead of taking electives, such as Wind Ensemble?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:46:59
Wooje, if you like wind ensemble, you should keep taking it.  I do hope you'll challenge yourself to a reasonable degree, especially in math and science courses, but that doesn't mean you need to give up the other things you love.
zero.destroyer 2011-10-13 19:47:46
Richard/10/CA: Do you judge also based upon financial standings?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:47:47
Not at all.  We admit the best students for MIT, regardless of finances, and then give every student all the scholarship they need to be able to afford MIT.
hasan4444 2011-10-13 19:48:02
H. Alsibyani / +12 / Saudi (KAUST scholar):  Are there any differences in research opportunities at MIT for intl. students?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:48:04
Hasan (?): International students at MIT have essentially the same research opportunities as other students, through such programs as UROP, which sponsors undergraduates to work with faculty members on research projects. (There are a few off-campus programs, like the REU programs supported by the US National Science Foundation, that are limited to US citizens and permanent residents.)
frignr 2011-10-13 19:49:10
Seung/11th/MD: Do you guys accept AP credits? If so, which ones?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:49:12
Yes, see http://web.mit.edu/firstyear/2015/subjects/ap.html
mario123 2011-10-13 19:49:38
Kevin/10/Massachusetts/USA Do you guys have an applied math program? If you do, how does it compare with the rest of the nation?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:49:41
Kevin: MIT's math department has a separate applied math division, which (like many things at MIT) is one of the best in the country. Specialties include combinatorics, theoretical computer science, mathematical biology, fluid dynamics, and more.
zero.destroyer 2011-10-13 19:50:10
Richard/10/CA/ How much does MIT cost for undergrad years?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:50:11
See http://mitadmissions.org/afford/basics
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:50:34
To follow up the answer to Kevin: I should also say that there is a special applied math version of the math major, which focuses on interactions with other disciplines.
Cortana 2011-10-13 19:51:19
Kyle/12th grade/NY/ Does MIT offer degrees in Engineering Physics and/or Nuclear engineering?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:51:20
Kyle: yes and yes. Matt gave a link to a list of majors above, but rest assured that every form of engineering you can imagine is included!
alanzee 2011-10-13 19:52:06
Alan / 11th / PA: How important are test scores? Would a perfect score on the SAT (or similar test) significantly increase my chances of admission?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:52:09
Test scores are one way of getting a sense of your academic preparation, but not the only way.  Your curriculum, grades, recommendations, cocurriculars, and more will give us a sense of things as well.  See more admissions/test score information & statistics here: http://mitadmissions.org/apply/process/stats
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:52:47
Don't stress out about trying to get perfect SAT scores -- they won't guarantee admission; most students we admit don't have perfect test scores.
prasanna1712 2011-10-13 19:53:14
Prasanna/ 9th grade/ POS, Trinidad and Tobago/ Do IMO medalists have a higher chance of being admited?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:53:16
Prasanna: Like being admitted to MOP (the US IMO training program), medaling at IMO is a great accomplishment which will be taken into account by MIT admissions.
bombuuj 2011-10-13 19:53:33
Erdenechimeg/11th grade/USAP/Uvs-Mongolia-Our school has a 11 grade system , and this means we have knowledge of a 12 grader in America. Will I be at disadvantage bacause I am graduateing with 11th grade?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:53:34
No. I am rather familiar with the Mongolian schooling system; I look forward to your application!
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:54:03
I believe Matt is familiar with pretty much every educational system in the world...
betlwedl 2011-10-13 19:54:24
Dominic/11th/MI/: I took the SAT Subject tests in October, but am retaking them in November just in case. If I include my October SAT Subject test scores in my Early Action application and still forward the November scores as soon as they arrive, will the November scores be considered or will you only look at the October ones?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:54:27
We can consider November scores, for EA but only if you pre-designate MIT as a recipient. If you use score choice, we will not see these scores in time for EA.
Neuralactuator 2011-10-13 19:54:59
Justin/10th/NY: what is the weight of the AMC/AIME scores on the admissions process?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:55:00
We ask for scores, and if you choose to provide them, they will be one of many things we'll consider in our process.
alsaxena 2011-10-13 19:55:35
Alisha/10th grade/WA: How do AP/IB scores factor into the admissions process?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:55:38
We ask for scores, and if you choose to provide them, they will be one of many things we'll consider in our process.
alsaxena 2011-10-13 19:55:43
Alisha/10th grade/WA: Is it true that you have to be at the highest level of math at your school to receive admissions to MIT?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:55:46
Alisha: there are certainly no such conditions. What is true is that MIT admissions does try to normalize for the fact that different students have access to different educational resources, by trying to assess how well you have taken advantages of the opportunities available to you.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:55:50
(Sorry to cut and paste, but it's the same answer!)
Darkfire359 2011-10-13 19:56:45
Katie / 10th / NE: I'm taking the PSAT this year; do you look at PSAT scores in admissions, and if so, do you look at sophomore/freshman scores in addition to junior scores?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:56:46
No, we do not consider PSAT scores.  Use it for practice, and maybe to get a National Merit Scholarship!
guxiaoyi 2011-10-13 19:56:51
Lisa/12th grade/How do you value contest records for international student?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:56:52
Lisa: The admissions office is familiar with not only the educational systems but also the contests in many countries. They should be able to figure out how contest results in other countries compare with those in the US.
mathcountsloser 2011-10-13 19:57:52
MCL/9th grade/IL/If you take university level math courses at a university during high school, can you choose not to get credit for it so you can take it again at MIT?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:57:53
MCL: it would probably be better for you to get the credit and then take a more advanced class at MIT!
mario123 2011-10-13 19:58:41
Kevin Jiang/10/MA/USA What is your opinion on participation in Varsity Sports? For example, if you are on your school's Varsity Tennis team, does that help your application?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:58:45
We value student participation in extracurriculars of all sorts, not just sports.  Sports, music, newspaper, service, theater, art, a job, recreational math -- any of these things are good.
Yoni2b 2011-10-13 19:59:06
Yoni/11th Grade/NY, will it affect us negatively if we write about our political works in a minority party, like socialist?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 19:59:07
No!! Political preferences are not a factor in admissions. If anything, a convincing argument about why you believe in a minority party might help your case!
oishibhat 2011-10-13 19:59:55
Oishi/9th/NJ: Is a sport required? If not, then how important are sports? How much would they count for in an application?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 19:59:56
To follow up: no, a sport is not required.
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:00:44
Richard: admission is need-blind; ability to pay is not a factor.
Julio7 2011-10-13 20:00:47
Julio/ 12/ Mexico: How can I apply to the university, if I´m studing in Mexico?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:00:48
We have students from Mexico coming in each year. Read about the international admissions procedure here: http://mitadmissions.org/apply/international/howto
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:01:07
(sorry, I lost Richard's question somehow, but it's clear what it was)
pr0likethis 2011-10-13 20:01:20
Brandon/11/IL: In the application, is there a place to put AMC/AIME/USAMO scores or other Math Competiton awards, and if so, would they help our application?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:01:24
Yes and yes
batter8642 2011-10-13 20:02:19
Alejandro/ 8th grade/ Puerto Rico- Are there any non-math or nonscience minors?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:02:20
Yes! See the full list here: http://mitadmissions.org/discover/majors There are great professors in the humanities at MIT, including 4 Pulizer Prize winners!
soulspeedy 2011-10-13 20:02:28
Vincent/11th/NC:  If I take an SAT subject test twice will you take the higher score?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:02:29
Yes
firework 2011-10-13 20:02:39
David/10th grade/NJ: Are math camps such as PROMYS and Ross considered in the admissions process?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:02:39
Yes
mario123 2011-10-13 20:02:59
Kevin/10/Massachusetts In your eyes, is success in math contests more impressive than success in science contests, since math contests truly emphasizes creative and problem solving skill, while many science olympiads are heavily based around memorization?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:03:00
Kevin: both math and science contests are considered as appropriate.
batter8642 2011-10-13 20:03:15
Alejandro Proskauer/ 8th grade/ Puerto Rico- What is the pet policy at MIT?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:03:17

mathcountsloser 2011-10-13 20:04:32
Yunus/9th grade/IL/ Does MIT offer many of the major undergrad courses during the summer?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:04:34
Yunus: most MIT students do not take many classes during the summer (they are often off doing research, internships, or other things), but some courses for freshmen are offered during the summer.
algebralien 2011-10-13 20:04:50
Pranav/7th grade/FL;  Does the home schooling students get the same chance as the regular school students?  How about students from IB Schools -- if I am homeschooled and I take many challenging courses, will I have an equal chance as an IB student at regular highschool?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:04:54
Homeschooled students are at no disadvantage. http://mitadmissions.org/apply/prepare/homeschool
oishibhat 2011-10-13 20:05:47
Oishi/9th/NJ: Approximately what range of gpa's have you accepted?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:05:48
Most students we admit have mostly As (straight As are not required or expected) in a rigorous curriculum.
r7110 2011-10-13 20:06:10
Jin / 10th Grade / CA: If I were to compete in the Olympics in 2016, which may be during my second year at college, what can be done to suit my schedule?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:06:12
Jin: many MIT students participate in extracurrricular sports, so we are used to accommodating them by setting alternate exam dates and the like. Good luck!!
pseudonymous0 2011-10-13 20:06:38
Isaac/10th/MA:  My school does not offer more advanced classes after BC Calculus, which I currently in; do you have any suggestions to fill the additional 2 years of mathematics?

Amanda/8th/IN: If  a girl passs AIME, does it increase the chances for being accepted because histrically not many girls can pass AIME?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:08:20
No. If you get in, it will be because you are awesome, not because you're a girl. (But you'll find lots of AIME-qualifying girls -- and boys -- at MIT)
bombuuj 2011-10-13 20:08:58
Erdenechimeg/11th grade/Uvs-Do you give a better chance for diverse students who is also participating in USAP program?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:09:00
USAP is great -- I do lots of works with them.
antimonyarsenide 2011-10-13 20:09:31
10th / NC: If we go to an admissions interview and don't do it well (i.e. we're too nervous to talk right), would it have been better not to go to the interview at all?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:09:33
No, I still recommend that you should interview. It generally will help you, even if you're very nervous.
aivant 2011-10-13 20:10:02
Aivant/ 7th grade /KS: What are some things middleschoolers can do that can give them a higher chance of admission?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:10:03
Keep working hard, do the things you enjoy, and don't worry about the college admissions process for a while :)
VIPMaster 2011-10-13 20:10:42
Sree / 12 / MA: What should I do if I never officially received my AIME score?

You can contact the AMC folks in Lincoln, NE if you like
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:11:57
Just FYI -- Prof. Kedlaya and I can see that you have many, many questions.  We won't be able to get to them all. We're doing the best we can!
VIPMaster 2011-10-13 20:12:42
Sree / 12 / MA: So, I do a lot of math research/work on my own, but do not have a formal "research advisor" who can testify to that. How do I show this in my application?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:12:43
Sree: you can describe it in your essay, but if you can find someone who can comment on your work (e.g., by asking one of your math teachers, or a local university professor), that would help too.
jli10 2011-10-13 20:13:13
Jonathan / 11th Grade / GA: Out of curiosity, what is your most popular major? Minor?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:13:14
Most popular major: Electrical Engineering & Computer Science ("Course 6"). I don't know what the most popular minor is, but it might be music
MonchoSB 2011-10-13 20:13:35
is it true that you choose only 1 student per country in central america?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:13:38
No not at all.
kim2013 2011-10-13 20:14:04
Kimberly/10th grade/MA: What are essentially the main parts of the MIT application?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:14:06
See http://mitadmissions.org/apply/freshman/dates
mhy123 2011-10-13 20:14:21
Generally speaking, does MIT prefer lopsided students (i.e. particularly good in specficially one field) or well-rounded students?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:14:22
mhy123: MIT takes both specialized and broad students; we're looking for diversity over the whole student body, not necessarily within each individual student!
proglote 2011-10-13 20:14:57
Victor/11th/Brazil : Can TOEFL be substituted by ECPE or ECCE (for international students)?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:14:58
At this time, the only English as a foreign language test that we accept is TOEFL.
tonypr 2011-10-13 20:15:46
Anthony/12th grade/ Puerto Rico: Hello, I had my interview with an MIT alumni two days ago and have started the application procces for MIT. I've competed at the IMO, Ibero american and centro american competion and have won prizes. My question is then where do I place those achievements and others similar to them? Thanks
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:15:49
There is a section on the application for awards & honors; list them there.
Jasmine8925 2011-10-13 20:16:24
Mallika/11/OR: I just entered the Math Jam so sorry if this was already asked... if I'm taking WOOT, should I list it as an extracurricular activity on my application? or a class on self-reported coursework?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:16:26
Either would work; I've seen students do both
mathcountsloser 2011-10-13 20:16:35
Yunus/9th/IL/ If I take undergraduate courses up to topology during high school at a smaller university, may I still take the same courses at MIT?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:16:36
Yunus: No, you can place out of required courses like calculus, and then you can start taking math courses at whatever level is appropriate for you.
tornado.adv4 2011-10-13 20:17:06
Laura/12/CA: I've seen various advice online about not reporting relatively low AMC scores; would you recommend this, or should I just report low scores anyway? (Would low scores be viewed negatively on an application?)
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:17:10
Don't let being on AOPS skew your view of what a good AMC score is :) Report it if you like, but if you don't that's fine too.
VIPMaster 2011-10-13 20:17:16
Sree / 12 / MA: If I've finished a class on OpenCourseWare, could I list it as one of  my classes?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:17:19
Yes
addictedtomath 2011-10-13 20:17:31
David / 9th / DE: What is the highest level math course that is offered at MIT?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:17:32
David: As high as you can imagine! Undergraduates can take any course for which they are qualified, including graduate-level courses. I have certainly had a few freshmen in my graduate courses!
itadeufa 2011-10-13 20:18:21
Ivan/11th grade/ São Paulo, Brazil  Are there many students in MIT who take part in other olympiads e.g. the international physics olympiad?  Does participating in  olympiads increase the chances of an international student being accepted?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:18:22
Ivan: the international competitions are certainly a good way for MIT to get some information about international students. The main thing is to take advantage of what opportunities you have access to!
Jasmine8925 2011-10-13 20:18:35
Mallika/11/OR: when do i need to send my october SAT score to make sure you will get it by the early action deadline?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:18:38
We need to have the score in our computers at MIT by approximately the 1st of December
alsaxena 2011-10-13 20:19:24
Alisha/10th grade/WA: Does MIT provide merit-based scholarships?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:19:26
Alisha: As far as I know, scholarships are based exclusively on financial need. It would be hard to decide merit anyway, since all of the students we admit (and many of the ones we can't admit) are pretty meritorious!
HeatDynasty 2011-10-13 20:19:32
David/11/Ontario :  How is the relation between MIT and other universities (like Havard)?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:19:34
Good -- do you know about HMMT?  We also have cross-registration for classes and a number of joint student groups.
jli10 2011-10-13 20:19:54
Jonathan / 11th Grade / GA: Is early action at MIT restrictive or non-restrictive?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:19:55
Non-restrictive
Jasmine8925 2011-10-13 20:20:48
Mallika/12/OR: (I think I might have accidentally typed 11 last time :P) I'm going to take a college math class in the spring semester, but I'm not sure which one since I don't know the schedule yet. What should I write on self reported coursework?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:20:49
Put your best guess, and then let us know on the MidYear Report what you actually decide.
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:20:50
To follow up on the answer to David: there is especially strong interaction between Harvard and MIT math majors, of which the joint organization of HMMT is just one indication. There's still a pretty fierce rivalry over the Putnam, though!
theax 2011-10-13 20:22:05
Andrew/12/CA - just a follow up on the EPGY program - would taking an EPGY class be looked at less favorably than a class at a community college (since EPGY is an online class) in terms of admissions?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:22:06
No more or no less favorably.  Some options work better than others for some students.  It's good to be taking on this kind of challenge either way
Darkfire359 2011-10-13 20:22:11
Katie / 10th / NE: If you take courses at a public university, can you transfer the credit you earn to MIT?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:22:12
Katie: MIT is fairly stingy about transferring credits, but you can probably place out of many of the required freshman courses (by taking the placement exams at the beginning of the first year). However, most likely you will not need to take those classes again; you can instead start in more advanced courses as appropriate.
pnpcomplete 2011-10-13 20:23:15
Carlos/11th Grade/Vancouver: is there an orchestra at MIT that undergraduates may join, yet do not have to take music classes at the university?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:23:17
The MIT Symphony Orchestra: http://web.mit.edu/mitso/
theax 2011-10-13 20:23:46
Andrew/12/CA - if someone i know took the AMC/AIME for two years, but didn't want to put down the low AMC score, can she not?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:23:48
There's no requirement to list such scores.
Arjadaga 2011-10-13 20:23:57
Arjun/8th grade/MD: What courses are required for a major in physics?
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:23:58
Arjun: most departments have their graduation requirements posted on their web sites.
Weegee13 2011-10-13 20:24:17
Is MIT actually famous for something?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:24:18
Iron Man went to MIT.
Vist09 2011-10-13 20:25:20
Arun/12/New Zealand: What if my SAT account does not have enough letters to exactly match my full passport name? Will you be able to accomodate?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:25:23
Actually, this is somewhat common -- send us an email to admissions@mit.edu explaining, and we'll make do
Jasmine8925 2011-10-13 20:25:34
Mallika/12/OR: There's a box on the application for a link to something you've built... Can the website of the math circle I founded go there?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:25:36
Yes!
mario123 2011-10-13 20:26:24
Kevin/10/Massachusetts On the activities form, do you suggest that only one of those 5 activities is devoted to math contests(if you do weel in math contests that is)?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:26:25
You can combine them all into one line called "Math"
batter8642 2011-10-13 20:26:33
Alejandro/ 8th/ Puerto Rico/ Do people who send applications early have a better chance of getting in?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:26:34
No
kedlaya 2011-10-13 20:26:35
Sorry everyone, I have to run off, but I think Matt will be taking questions for a few more minutes. Thanks for all the great questions so far!
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:26:48
Thanks, Prof. Kedlaya!
rrusczyk 2011-10-13 20:26:55
Thanks again for your time, Kiran!
MonchoSB 2011-10-13 20:27:25
Ramon/12/El salvador: if i send a recording of me playing for the orchestra, would this help in admision?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:27:27
Music supplements certainly can help, as can art and athletics. See here: http://mitadmissions.org/apply/freshman/supplements

Saphira 7 2011-10-13 20:28:30
Does MIT practice affirmative action?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:28:31
Yes
Neuralactuator 2011-10-13 20:28:35
What summer programs are offered at MIT for high school students?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:28:39

MonchoSB 2011-10-13 20:29:25
Ramon/12/el salvador: can i apply only with two subject tests and the TOEFL
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:29:27
Yes
theax 2011-10-13 20:29:33
Andrew/12/CA: As a followup to the "link to something you've built" question, can i link something that I've worked on with others (like a website)?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:29:35
Yes
mathcountsloser 2011-10-13 20:30:29
Is the Math Jam officially over?
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:30:31
We'll be wrapping up in just a minute, yes...
masterofpupets 2011-10-13 20:31:18
Joshua/11/NY: What does MIT think about the IB (International Baccalaureate)?
AruKasera 2011-10-13 20:31:20
AP vs IB which do you prefer? IB is harder so if AP is equally good, I would go for that.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:32:00
(last question, sorry)
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:33:10
We don't thinking that AP or IB is necessarily better.  We certainly respect the IB and know of its rigor.  And obviously we know the AP well.  Most students do not have a choice between which curriculum they do, so we have no preference.  Students form both AP and IB curriculums do equally well at MIT.
MattMcGannMIT 2011-10-13 20:33:54
Thank you all for coming!
rrusczyk 2011-10-13 20:34:03
Thanks again to Matt and Kiran for spending so much time with us tonight to tell us all about MIT!
