The denominator of a fraction is the number under the horizontal bar, or vinculum. It represents the amount of parts in an object. The denominator can never be zero, because you can't divide something by zero.

If the absolute value of the denominator is greater than the absolute value of the numerator of a fraction, it is a proper fraction. If it is the other way around, the fraction is improper.
