Bogus Proof Marathon
pifinity   7684
Hi!
I'd like to introduce the Bogus Proof Marathon.

In this marathon, simply post a bogus proof that is middle-school level and the next person will find the error. You don't have to post the real solution :P

Use classic Marathon format:
[hide=P#]a1b2c3[/hide]
[hide=S#]a1b2c3[/hide]

Example posts:

P(x)
-----
S(x)
P(x+1)
-----
Let's go!! Just don't make it too hard!

9 Mixed numbers
GA34-261   88
personally i hate mixed numbers. they're rarely used in competition math and just don't make sense unless you want to estimate a value. i hate how in school they make you "simplify" everything into a mixed number or else it's wrong :(

Penchick's Rubber Duckie – Original Problem
NicoPlusAki_2011   4

It’s BathWash Wednesday, Penchick’s favorite day in the MathDash calendar!
As he waddles into his warm bubble bath, his rubber duckie squeaks and whispers:

"Let a, b, c be the roots of the polynomial.."

x³ + 2x² - 5x + 7.

Find the value of:
1 / a² + 1 / b² + 1 / c²."

Camp Conway/Camp Sierpinski Acceptance
fossasor   11
(trying this again in a different thread now that it's later)

I've been accepted into Camp Conway, which is a part of National Math Camps, a organization of Math Camps that currently includes two: Camp Conway and Camp Sierpinski. Camp Conway is located at Harvey Mudd in California and happens during the first half of summer, while Camp Sierpinski is in North Carolina's research triangle and happens during the second half. Each of them has two two-week long sessions that accept 30 people (it's very focused on social connection), which means 120 people will be accepted to the program in total.

Given how much of the math community is on aops, I think there's a decent chance one of the 120 people might see this thread. So - has anyone here been accepted into Camp Conway or Camp Sierpinski? If so, which session are you going during, and what are you looking forward to?

I'll be attending during the second session of Conway in the first few weeks of July - I'm looking forward to the Topics Classes as a lot of them sound pretty fun.

I want to start a FE tree. One will post a FE equation, and others will try to solve. There will be two problems to solve. If you have solved one of them, post a new one.If two, then post two FEs.
I start:

A number theory problem

Given $n$ positve numbers $a_1,a_2,...,a_n$. Prove that there exists such $n$ positive numbers $b_1, b_2, ...,b_n$ such that $b_i \ge a_i$ $\forall$ $1 \leq i \leq n$; $\forall$ $1 \leq i,j \leq n$ then $\frac{b_i}{b_j} \in \mathbb{Z}$ or $\frac{b_j}{b_i} \in \mathbb{Z}$; and $b_1b_2...b_n \leq 2^{\frac{n-1}{2}}a_1a_2...a_n$.

Let $ABC$ be an acute triangle. Points $B, D, E$, and $C$ lie on a line in this order and satisfy $BD = DE = EC$. Let $M$ and $N$ be the midpoints of $AD$ and $AE$, respectively. Suppose triangle $ADE$ is acute, and let $H$ be its orthocentre. Points $P$ and $Q$ lie on lines $BM$ and $CN$, respectively, such that $D, H, M,$ and $P$ are concyclic and pairwise different, and $E, H, N,$ and $Q$ are concyclic and pairwise different. Prove that $P, Q, N,$ and $M$ are concyclic.

Question on homogenous continuous-time Markov chain
Gauler   1
Consider a homogenous continuous-time Markov chain $p(t)$ whose evolution in time is described by the forward Kolmogorov equation
$$\frac{\partial p_i(t)}{\partial t}=\sum_k A_{ki}\,p_k(t), \qquad \sum_j A_{ij}=0, \qquad A_{ii}\le 0$$and $A_{ij}\ge 0$ for all $i\neq j$.

Find $p(1)$ for
$$\begin{bmatrix}-2 &1 &1\\ 1& -1& 0\\ 2 &1 &-3\end{bmatrix}, \qquad p(0)=\begin{bmatrix}1/6\\ 1/3\\ 1/2\end{bmatrix}$$describing the rate matrix and initial condition.

Now, consider the time dependent distribution $q(t)$ defined as $q_i(t)=c(t)p_i(t)^2$. Find any rate matrix $B(t)$ such that $q(t)$ is the solution of the forward Kolmogorov equation given by
$$\frac{\partial q_i(t)}{\partial t}=\sum_k B_{ki}(t)\, q_k(t),\qquad \sum_j B_{ij}(t)=0,\qquad B_{ii}(t)\le 0$$and $B_{ij}(t)\ge 0$ for all $i\neq j$.

Prove that there exists a continuous linear map \( A \) from the space \( l^\infty \) (the space of bounded sequences) to \( \mathbb{R} \) such that:
$a) A(x_1, x_2, \dots) \geq 0 \text{ if } x = (x_1, x_2, \dots) \text{ and } x_n \geq 0 \text{ for all } n.$
$b) A(x_1, x_2, \dots) = A(x_2, x_3,...)$

hello friends,
in the 2023 Iran MO 3rd round contest collection, the geometry section has been mistakenly titled as Algebra. Can someone fix?

PAGE NOT SCROLLING DOWN ALL THE WAY; GETS STUCK 1.5 POSTS BEFORE THREAD END
CurlyFalcon55   19
Summary of the problem:
Whenever I push the big, top right "Reply" button– NOT THE SMALL LITTLE "QUICK REPLY" BAR ON THE BOTTOM, and reply, I can't scroll down all the way to the bottom of the thread that I just posted in. Sometimes, very rarely though, I doesn't scroll down all the way when I push the "Quick Reply" bar.

-----Page URL:
Anywhere in the "Introduction to Number Theory" forum in AoPS

-----Steps to reproduce:

1. Go to the link above.

2. Click any thread or create a new one.

3. Click the "Reply" button, not the quick reply bar.

4. Type a reply.

5. Push the "Submit" button.

6. Try to scroll down. if you’re lucky, the problem will reproduce.

-----Expected behavior:
To scroll all the way down.

-----Frequency:
Almost every time I push the big "Reply" button, sometimes (but rarely) when I push the "Quick Reply" bar.

-----Operating system(s):
macOS Sequoia 15.4.1

-----Browser(s), including version:
Chrome, (I don't know what version)

-----Additional information:
-It rarely does it in the "Quick Reply" bar.
-It almost always does it in the big "Reply" button on the top right.

-----Can anyone reproduce?

So.... discovered this weird thing....

instead of doing the normal [.hide] [\hide] thing.... replace the hide with aops....

Why does it become emojis????

Here's the result doing what I have told of the whole message (including this part):
