I'll turn the room over to Marisa now!
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:34:07
Hi, everybody, and welcome to the annual Mathcamp Math Jam! A big thanks to @rrusczyk, @LauraZed, @ahuhn and the whole AoPS team for hosting us (on the lovely new site). Let’s do some more introductions.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:34:21
I’m Marisa Debowsky; I'm the Program Director of Canada/USA Mathcamp. I've been teaching at MC since 2006, so this will be my 10th (consecutive!) summer at camp. I’ve been running the program since 2009.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:34:35
I’m joined today by Halimeda Glickman-Hoch, who is our Assistant Director, and Mira will be here a little later.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:34:43
We’re here to talk about Mathcamp 2015, both the program and the application process.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:34:55
Halimeda and I will field questions shortly. If you'd like to pose a question to us, we’d love to know who’s writing, so here’s a suggested format:
Name / Age / State-or-Country: Question
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:35:05
e.g.
Marisa / 15 / NY: What is the official song of Mathcamp?
or
Melanie / Parent / Denmark: What are the laundry facilities like?
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:35:42
Hello everyone! I was a camper at Mathcamp way back in 2006 and 2007. I came back as a “JC” in 2011. (The JC’s are an awesome team of folks who run all the non-mathematical aspects of camp and help look out for the campers).
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:35:54
now I'm the Assistant Director.
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:35:59
I'm glad to see you all
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:36:06
Halimeda, Mira and I will answer questions for 90 minutes. We will try to answer as many questions as we can. You can find tons of information on http://mathcamp.org/, so if we don?t get to your questions this evening, try the website.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:36:44
I’ll give you a few sentences on the basics and then turn it over to questions:
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:37:58
[0] What is Mathcamp, anyway? Mathcamp is a 5-week residential summer program for mathematically talented high school students. This year, Mathcamp will be July 5 - August 9 at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:38:46
[1] Who comes to Mathcamp? Our typical student body is about 120 students, about 65-75 new campers and 45-55 returning alumni. About 2/3 are male and 1/3 are female. Campers come from all over the world.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:39:07
[2] Math at Mathcamp: Our central goal is to allow you to take charge of your own mathematical education by giving you a huge variety of choices and the freedom to choose.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:39:23
[3] Student Life: Your non-academic life at Mathcamp is as self-directed as your math. There are a zillion (approximately) activities happening, and you choose how to spend your time.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:39:59
[4] Admissions: Admission is competitive, and we admit typically 20-30% of the students who apply.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:40:09
The application process starts now, with the Qualifying Quiz (http://www.mathcamp.org/quiz): an untimed entrance exam, designed to be challenging and fun. The Quiz is the central component of the application, and it?s our tool for evaluating when students are ready for Mathcamp.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:40:19
The application also includes two letters of recommendation, a personal essay, and some information about you and your math background.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:40:30
The deadline to apply is April 15th. (You can also apply early action, by March 15th.)
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:40:44
[5] Financial aid: We offer tons of need-based financial aid, and about 20% of our students received full scholarships last year. Every student (US, Canadian, & International; new and returning) is eligible for financial aid.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:41:19
Okay! That was a long intro, and I want to get to your questions, so let's get started. We can answer more questions about Mathcamp student life, academics, admissions, financial aid or anything else. We'd like to meet *you* along with your question, so if you could preface your question with your name, age, and location, that would be handy.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:41:47
For example:
Marisa / 15 / NY: What is Mathcamp’s official uniform?

(But that format is not mandatory - in keeping with the spirit of Mathcamp, just about everything is optional, and we’ll address you any way you like.)
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:42:59
Let’s spend about 7:45 - 8:15 on questions about the program itself: mathematical and residential life at Mathcamp; the people; the campus; the “during” and “after” of Mathcamp. (And then we’ll switch over to discussing the “before”: the application process and financial aid.)
adik7 2015-03-11 19:44:36
Aditya/13/WA: For what age group would this camp be suggested for?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:44:39
Students are ages 13 - 18. The mean, median and mode of the age distribution are all 16.
gamjawon 2015-03-11 19:44:45
Eric / 12 / NY: Would a student at age of 12 be accepted?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:44:53
It would be VERY rare. It's never happened before.
xjeanniewx 2015-03-11 19:45:15
Jeannie/13/Florida/What is the ideal age/grade in high school to attend?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:45:24
Any time between 13 and 18 is good!
StepNewman 2015-03-11 19:45:37
Stephen / 14 / Virginia: Are there shorter-length classes, as well as the camp-length classes?
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:45:40
yes
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:45:46
some classes last only one week
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:45:52
some last 4 or 5
Longhair343 2015-03-11 19:46:41
??? / 18 / NJ : Next year would be my Senior year. If I end up getting in this year, would I be able to go next year, too, even though I'll be 19?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:47:01
You can attend the summer after senior year; we can discuss special cases with age offline.
rvila 2015-03-11 19:48:09
Rei/16/Ontario: Are there online mathcamp courses?
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:48:13
no
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:48:20
we're all on the campus together
xjeanniewx 2015-03-11 19:48:25
Is Mathcamp associated with Mathpath?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:48:27
We were founded by the same mathematician (Dr T), but we’re not affiliated. We like MP, though!
carjacker 2015-03-11 19:48:31
Do you plan to hold mathcamp in San Francisco?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:48:34
Maybe someday!
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:48:40
But we're in Tacoma, Washington this summer.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:48:47
And next year, we're planning east coast.
rvila 2015-03-11 19:48:53
Rei/16/Ontario: Do you do it in Canada ever?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:49:06
Not recently, mostly for logistical reasons.
johngraham 2015-03-11 19:49:10
brianna/12/ontario how many mathcamp campuses?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:49:14
Just one per year.
gamjawon 2015-03-11 19:50:01
Eric / 12 / NY: What type of classes are there?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:50:05
We teach courses on topics you’d usually encounter in college (or even grad school): Category Theory, Game Theory, Hyperbolic Geometry, Number Theory, Theoretical Computer Science - you name it. Classes come in many different formats, and vary in pace and difficulty from ‘recreational’ to ‘graduate seminar’. Students also work on projects, prepare for math competitions, and even teach their own classes.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:50:21
Here are some examples of course topics:
http://www.mathcamp.org/gettoknowmathcamp/academics/topics.php
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:51:12
as a rough outline: You get up, get breakfast in the college dining hall. we have classes in the morning, the afternoon includes some "office hour" time when all of the teachers are available to chat. Evenings usually are downtime... which includes doing homework, talking about math, board games, soccer on the quad, silly activities, baking etc.
yas 2015-03-11 19:51:23
What happens on a typical day at Mathcamp?
Longhair343 2015-03-11 19:51:55
??? / NJ / 18 : How in depth are we able to get to? Doesn't some courses need like months, or years of discipline?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:52:00
Students come with a variety of backgrounds; we make sure there are courses appropriate for those without any math exposure outside of high school, and courses for those who have a ton of background.
johngraham 2015-03-11 19:53:33
brianna/12/ontario do you have to be american?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:53:38
No! Students come from all over the world.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:53:51
We have had students from 49 US states (plus DC, Puerto Rico, and Guam), 9 Canadian provinces, and 33 other countries around the world. Each year, about 75% of our students are from the US, 10-15% from Canada, and 10-15% from other countries.
carjacker 2015-03-11 19:54:08
Do I need a laptop?
carjacker 2015-03-11 19:54:11
Do we work with only pen and paper since we don't need a laptop? Or is it that PCs are made available?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:54:16
Some students bring laptops. We also have a small computer lab in the dorm, and access to a big computer classroom in the academic building. But in general, you won’t need a computer for math - mostly for emailing your parents.
rvila 2015-03-11 19:54:27
Rei/16/Ontario: Isnt there a language barrier for the people coming from other countries?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:54:45
We do require everybody to be proficient in English, since our classes are all in English.
lakeoswegooregon 2015-03-11 19:54:56
Parent/Oregon: My sophomore daughter will have had Calc AB and BC. Would Math Camp challenge her?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:55:00
DEFINITELY.
blep 2015-03-11 19:55:06
Is MathCamp intended for math competition preparation or just learning math in general? What sort of atmosphere for learning (cheesy as it sounds, yes) is there?
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:55:09
There is some contest math at mathcamp (Problem solving courses, team problem solving competitions), but we teach all kinds of math. The atmosphere is... exciting/excited very much supportive.
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:55:18
elaborating on the kinds
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:55:49
lots of the math is usually college or graduate level material. everything from game theory to category theory
2015BARYer 2015-03-11 19:56:15
Alex Gu / 14 / IN: Can you attend MathCamp multiple times?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:56:17
Yes! Many students attend Mathcamp throughout high school; it’s not possible to run out of math or get bored.
Longhair343 2015-03-11 19:56:24
??? / 18 / NJ : I heard there is a class on Math Education and Giving Math Talks. Would we get a chance to learn how to communicate mathematics (to both peers and non-mathematicians)?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:56:27
Yes!!
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:56:47
You can even teach your own class. (You'd work with a mentor on developing the content and presentation.)
blep 2015-03-11 19:56:59
Could we get college credits from these courses?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:57:10
No, we're not affiliated with a college.
lyl1206 2015-03-11 19:57:18
Yelim/15/PA: Do we have opportunity to collaborate on research projects during camp?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:57:26
Yes! Lots of students choose to do projects.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:57:48
Here's more info about projects:
http://www.mathcamp.org/gettoknowmathcamp/academics/projects.php
stickman1668 2015-03-11 19:57:58
Alex/16/TX: How much prior knowledge or skill is required for the research projects?
carjacker 2015-03-11 19:58:29
What happens if I get hungry at night? Where is the food???
Gravity 2015-03-11 19:58:31
We eat meals together in the college dining hall, which usually has a schedule (no midnight snacks). But many students keep (non-perishable, sealed) food in their rooms. You won't go hungry
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:58:36
@Alex: It varies widely. Some projects are appropriate for students with little to no formal background; others have serious prequisites.
EricMathPath09 2015-03-11 19:58:53
HEIDI WAS HERE TOO
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:58:56
Hi Eric.
carjacker 2015-03-11 19:58:59
Do I get to work on projects with grad students?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:59:02
Yes!
blep 2015-03-11 19:59:52
Is it possible to be accepted one year, then the next year you apply, get rejected? (sounds harsh, I know)
MarisaD 2015-03-11 19:59:58
Once you get in, you don't have to reapply.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:00:15
Oh, sorry, to clarify:
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:00:23
Once you get in **and attend**, you don't have to reapply.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:00:53
If you are admitted and don't enroll, you do have to reapply. (But you can assume that we're excited about having you apply again!)
2015BARYer 2015-03-11 20:00:57
Alex Gu / 14 / IN: Is there homework in MathCamp?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:01:00
There is homework in some classes, though not all. However we won't be enforcing homework completion. Like many things at Mathcamp, it's self-directed. You choose how to spend your time. It will however be fun and interesting and challenging.
SimonSun 2015-03-11 20:01:08
How long do we study math each day?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:01:17
This is totally up to you.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:01:38
Most students choose to do something like 4 - 6 hours of math per day, but the standard deviation is big.
forthegreatergood 2015-03-11 20:01:41
Sonnhard/15/NY: Do research projects change each year?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:02:00
Yes! It's up to the instructors what to propose. But we do repeat popular projects, and students also bring their own ideas.
stickman1668 2015-03-11 20:02:11
Alex/16/TX: How much knowledge is necessary for the research opportunities? Are there different levels of projects that professors are working on?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:02:17
There are different levels, yes!
carjacker 2015-03-11 20:02:24
Is there only pure math or opportunities for applied math too?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:02:55
Both! We're going to have lots of Theoretical Computer Science and Physics this summer, I suspect, because we have several CS-y visiting speakers, and several phsyics-y visitors.
Eugenis 2015-03-11 20:03:04
This takes place during the school year?
Rotack00 2015-03-11 20:03:08
Can i still do my online Math class during MathCamp? The lecture is from 4:30 P.M.-6:00 P.M. Pacific time.
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:03:16
Mathcamp is a 5 week program in the summers (no schoolyear program)@ Eugenis
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:03:23
@Rotack: Yes. Your time at camp is flexible.
cedarwax 2015-03-11 20:05:04
what 5 weeks will the camp be?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:05:09
July 5 - Aug 9.
FlakeLCR 2015-03-11 20:05:11
Taehyung/16/CA: Is there a piano at MathCamp?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:05:12
Yes!
mathtastic 2015-03-11 20:05:16
Laquish/15/MA how does this program compare to others?
stickman1668 2015-03-11 20:05:21
Alex / 16 / TX: What is the most unique thing that your camp has to offer that other summer programs do not?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:05:23
One the big defining characteristics of Mathcamp is the flexibility of the program, both academic and non-academically. Students have a ton of freedom, which also means a lot of responsibility. You have access to a really wide variety of math and non-math activities, and an amazing community of people, and you choose how you want your summer to unfold.
cedarwax 2015-03-11 20:05:55
What will we be doing at the camp exactly?
ThePiPie 2015-03-11 20:06:33
Student/14/NJ How much knowledge do you think is required to get into Mathcamp, or to successfully understand the classes?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:06:35
You should be familiar with highschool math up through pre-calc (though it's fine if you've learned it outside of school). We don't assume you know anything outside the high school curriculum (though mathcamp will still challenge you if you do ) More importantly, you need curiosity, and creativity, and a willingness/love of being challenged.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:06:35
That's really up to you! But probably: taking some classes; maybe working on a project; going on some field trips; doing some fun evening activities. It's an intense experience.
Firstdream 2015-03-11 20:06:40
is the whole math camp just math or do we do some games?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:06:53
You can do all kinds of things. There are lots of games!
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:07:09
And also a camp choir, and a camp a cappella group, and salsa dancing classes, and swing dancing classes, and a yearbook....
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:07:32
and baking, and juggling, and making math sculptures out of all kind of fun objects....
thkim1011 2015-03-11 20:07:39
James Li / IN / 16: Is there a grand piano at MathCamp?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:07:46
Yes!
xjeanniewx 2015-03-11 20:07:51
Can we go sightseeing?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:07:52
Yes!
johngraham 2015-03-11 20:08:06
do we get to use the piano?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:08:11
Yes!
blep 2015-03-11 20:08:12
Are there practice rooms at MathCamp for those of use who don't play piano but play another instrument?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:08:14
Yes!
cedarwax 2015-03-11 20:08:17
Where is it?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:08:31
There's a piano in the dorm, and practice rooms in the music building on campus.
cedarwax 2015-03-11 20:08:33
I mean the camp
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:08:48
Ah. The University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington (this year).
yas 2015-03-11 20:08:51
Can we learn how to play the piano?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:08:53
Sure.
stickman1668 2015-03-11 20:08:57
What campus will we be at? Are we allowed to walk freely around the campus?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:09:04
Yes, you can move about campus freely!
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:09:15
And you can go off-campus, in groups of 3 or more.
cedarwax 2015-03-11 20:09:20
Will we all be able to see each other or will we never see some people at the camp?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:09:36
There are 120 students and 30 staff, so we all get to know each other at least a little bit.
carjacker 2015-03-11 20:09:40
I am a vegetarian - is that going to be a problem?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:09:42
no the dininghall usually has plenty of options for different food restrictions
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:09:43
Not at all. Me, too.
thkim1011 2015-03-11 20:10:19
Is there a steinway grand?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:10:27
I don't know what kind.
goveganddomath 2015-03-11 20:10:29
How about if you're vegan and gluten free?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:10:31
No problem.
TheCrafter 2015-03-11 20:10:32
Sean/14/TX Is the food good?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:10:37
Actually, yes!
jh235 2015-03-11 20:10:47
how would your courses, say, on things like point set topology and algebraic geometry compare to university courses
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:10:49
That’s a great question. We don’t try to condense an entire college course into one or two or four weeks; instead, we focus on a small piece of it, or hitting some cool highlights.
FlakeLCR 2015-03-11 20:11:06
Natan/14/MA: Is there an official bedtime?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:11:08
No, although there are quiet hours in the dorm so that everybody can sleep.
johngraham 2015-03-11 20:11:14
there are many other classes besides math, like dance, piano etc or just math?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:11:16
there are no formal classes in salsa dancing piano etc. But students and staff often arrange informal group lessons in the evenings or learn from each other in down time.
blippy1998 2015-03-11 20:12:15
Michael/16/IL You said it's mainly not contest math; would you still recommend Mathcamp to me over other camps if I want to focus mainly on competitive math?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:12:17
Sure! We do teach problem-solving classes, and you’ll find some peers who are excited about competitions.. Each year at camp, we have some IMO gold medalists and some people who’ve never even taken a math contest and everything in between.
Octophi 2015-03-11 20:13:08
how does rooming work?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:13:09
We match up roommates by age, messiness level, and how they plan to spend their evenings (studying, hanging out with friends, sleeping). We also try to honor roommate requests, if both people request to share a room.
mathtastic 2015-03-11 20:13:19

MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:13:24
If your friend also applies and gets in!
blep 2015-03-11 20:14:36
So one could potentially spend the whole four to five weeks doing math 12 hours a day, or doing math 1 hour a day?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:14:38
Yes. You’ll find that most people around you are going to class in the mornings, working on homework/projects in the afternoons, and doing some math and some other fun stuff in the evenings, so we hope that the culture of doing math (formally and informally) will inspire you to do math, too.
FlakeLCR 2015-03-11 20:14:43
Adam Bertelli/13/MA: Are there many sports at MathCamp?
rogert 2015-03-11 20:14:44

@FlakeLCR Yes, there are sports.
blep 2015-03-11 20:14:54

MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:14:58
Yes, it's residential.
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:15:09
You have lots of support in finding classes. you sit down with an academic advisor once a week to think about what courses you might take. Class descriptions are given out which say how fast a class will move, what knowledge is required, how the class will be run, etc.
eevee777 2015-03-11 20:15:31
Tim/14/BC: How much down time do we usually get?

blep 2015-03-11 20:15:35

MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:15:38
No, everybody lives on campus.
Octophi 2015-03-11 20:15:42

MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:15:43
Yes!
yas 2015-03-11 20:15:48
How do you evaluate messiness level?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:15:52
It's self-reported.
Longhair343 2015-03-11 20:15:54
Would we ever get a single room?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:16:05
It's possible (although somewhat rare).

Adam Bertelli/12/MA I live in WA, very close to the camp. Do I have to stay in a dorm?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:16:31
Yes, it's residential.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:16:48
Okay! Those were great questions about the program.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:16:56
Let’s spend about 8:15 - 8:45 on questions about applications and financial aid: eligibility, the application process, scholarships. (And then we’ll open up to any kinds of questions before we wrap up.)
Firstdream 2015-03-11 20:17:03
IS there a application pocress
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:17:20
Yes!
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:17:41
It starts with the Qualifying Quiz, and also includes essays, a math recommendation, a personal recommendation, and some information about your math background.
cedarwax 2015-03-11 20:17:47
How hard is it to get into this camp?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:18:06
It varies from year to year, but admission is competitive.
FlakeLCR 2015-03-11 20:18:13
Adam Bertelli/11/MA: Is there a higher probability of getting in through early admissions?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:18:25
No, the rate of admission is the same Early Action and Regular.
StepNewman 2015-03-11 20:18:36
Stephen / 14 / Virginia: Do most students that get into the camp successfully solve all of the application problems, or just most of them?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:18:46
Very few people solve all of them!
Octophi 2015-03-11 20:18:53
Joey/15/Alabama Is there any "good" number of problems to solve for the Mathcamp application? Also, should we submit work/partial solutions/ideas?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:18:54
you should definitely submit work and partial solutions and ideas! We want to see how you're thinking. It's totally fine if you can't solve all the questions. in fact very few people do. If you are finding the questions interesting and fun and challenging and making at least some progress that's a good sign.
lyl1206 2015-03-11 20:19:06
Yelim/15/PA: Do you prefer typed solutions for the Qualifying Quiz?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:19:20
We're not fussy. (But many people do type their solutions. We also offer a LaTeX template!)
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:19:34
Oh! It looks like Mira has joined us. Mira, want to introduce yourself?
MiraBernstein 2015-03-11 20:19:41
Hi everyone. I'm Mira and I've been involved with running Mathcamp for over 17 years.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:19:47
MiraBernstein 2015-03-11 20:19:54
But I've never done a MahtJam answering questions about it
eevee777 2015-03-11 20:19:59
Tim/14/BC: Who is in charge of the application process, like who decides who gets in?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:20:25
That would be us. There is no exact formula to admissions. We look for students who are well matched with Mathcamp, academically and personally.
xjeanniewx 2015-03-11 20:20:52
do you offer scholarships?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:20:54
We have lots of financial aid available! We are very much committed to making sure every student who gets in is able to attend.
blep 2015-03-11 20:21:04
What is the cost? How is it calculated? Does it vary depending on what classes you take?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:21:13
The full camp fee is $4000 US. (This includes tuition, room, board, & extracurriculars.)
gamjawon 2015-03-11 20:21:30
Eric / 12 / NY: How much yearly income would give you full scholarship?
thkim1011 2015-03-11 20:21:30
how much financial aid is given if we're like between poor and rich
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:21:32
About 20% of our students receive full scholarships: Mathcamp is FREE for US & Canadian families with household income below $60,000 US, and we even have travel grants to cover plane tickets to camp.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:21:38
Above $60,000 for US & Canadian students, we offer a sliding scale, and those who need assistance will be asked to contribute no more than 3% of their income. There is no set formula: we consider each request on an individual, case-by-case basis.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:21:47
We also offer need-based financial aid to international students, including full scholarships and travel grants. (We don’t use the same income cutoff because cost of living and currency exchange often make it an apples-and-oranges comparison, so we put together financial aid packages for each international student one a case-by-case basis.)
cedarwax 2015-03-11 20:21:57
Is there such a thing as full ride?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:21:59
yes
yas 2015-03-11 20:22:27
How do you receive a full ride or a travel grant?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:22:38
if your family makes under $60,000 per year and you live in the US or Canada it will be free
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:22:50
There's a financial aid application alongside the application for admission. (It's a short form.)
blep 2015-03-11 20:23:22
No one likes long forms.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:23:24
Rotack00 2015-03-11 20:23:32
For the travel grant, does it only cover plane costs or could we drive and have that cost covered?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:23:41
Either.
ShadowQueenPeach 2015-03-11 20:23:47
What are the most important factors in deciding admission?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:23:51
We’re looking for students with strong math backgrounds who are ready for Mathcamp classes. Beyond that, we’re looking for students who will thrive in this atmosphere. Mathcamp is an usual place! We treat students like adults, with the accompanying freedom and responsibility, and we want to bring students to camp who will use this opportunity to broaden their mathematical horizons, take initiative, and contribute to making Mathcamp awesome.
Saraswati Devi 2015-03-11 20:24:03
do people who enjoy math but have little competitive math experience have a chance of getting in?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:24:06
Yes!
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:24:15
Contest math is great (and can be fun and motivational), but isn’t necessarily an indicator for how good a fit someone is for Mathcamp.
walmartswagdaddy 2015-03-11 20:24:37
In regards to recommendation within the application process, whose letter of recommendation is required and which ones are suggested (that is if not required already)?
2015WOOTer 2015-03-11 20:24:39
Adam Bertelli/12/MA How important are letters of recommendation?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:25:02
We require two letters (one math, one personal); you can add supplemental letters if you have a good reason to.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:25:24
The letters are important in that they help us get a more complete picture of you as an applicant, mathematically and non-mathematically.
cedarwax 2015-03-11 20:25:26
Do we mail or send it on the internet?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:25:30
We strongly prefer online!
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:25:47
We have a very nice system that our long-time instructor Kevin built for us.
Octophi 2015-03-11 20:25:52

MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:26:00
Actually, now that you mention it, we should do that.

I'll tell Kevin.
jh235 2015-03-11 20:26:04

Firstdream 2015-03-11 20:27:04
IS the personal recommendation like a teacher or a parent
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:27:24
The personal letter should be from another adult who knows you personally, but is not a relative (and preferably not a teacher, unless you've worked with them in an unusual context - we're looking for someone who knows you outside the classroom).
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:28:04
This is often a sports coach, orchestra teacher, employer, pastor / rabbi / imam, volunteer supervisor -
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:28:10
it can even be a family friend.
DragonTamer 2015-03-11 20:28:14

DragonTamer 2015-03-11 20:28:14

MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:28:29
You do! It's another way for us to get to know you and your (mathematical and non-math) interests.
blippy1998 2015-03-11 20:28:32

I recommend pen if you're going to scan your solutions, but yes.
blippy1998 2015-03-11 20:29:56
Michael/16/IL What about people who pretty much exclusively do competitive math? (i.e. never done any sort of research project)
blippy1998 2015-03-11 20:29:57
Michael/16/IL Also, do you keep our applications from last year or disregard them?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:30:10
We do keep applications from previous years.
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:30:36
that's ok too. Mathcamp isn't focused on competition, but if that's your background and you're excited about branching out that is great.
walmartswagdaddy 2015-03-11 20:30:49
If more than two recommendation letters are submitted, can some of the additional ones be in regards to the same topic (such as 2 more letters in regards to a personal discussion of the applicant)? Also, just to reaffirm, can the personal letter be from one's former teacher (but who is still a teacher)?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:30:55
Generally, students only submit two letters; you might want a supplement if the third recommender could really say something different. And yes, a former teacher is okay.
ShadowQueenPeach 2015-03-11 20:31:04
William/15/OR: Will Mathcamp involve a lot of team problem solving?

So submitting a late application would drastically decrease your chances of getting in.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:39:05
Yes, please do apply by April 15th.
Firstdream 2015-03-11 20:39:07
Whats percentage of applicants that get in
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:39:18
It depends how many applicants we have! But typically 20 - 30%.
Longhair343 2015-03-11 20:39:41
Wait, would it look bad if I go for early action and not be able to finish the problem?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:39:53
you don't need to finish the problems
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:40:14
...but you should try them all!
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:40:20
early action candidates are not given preference
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:40:23
We offer an early deadline in case people want an early decision: e.g. because they are applying to other programs that have similar deadlines, or need to get started on a visa / plane ticket as an international student. Most students take the extra month to work on the Quiz.
DragonTamer 2015-03-11 20:40:28
It seems like the number of campers is about 120- is that a coincidence or is there a limiting factor?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:40:39
We've come to feel that it's our ideal camp size.
csmath 2015-03-11 20:40:42
15/TX: Does my qualifying quiz "score" affect the classes I can take at Mathcamp?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:40:44
No!
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:40:52
You choose your classes.
raxu 2015-03-11 20:40:56
How did you come up with the name Alfonso for the test?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:41:04
Alfonso is a long-time instructor at Mathcamp.
MiraBernstein 2015-03-11 20:41:27
Also Alfonso is a royal name -- I think there have been about 14 kings of Spain named Alfonso
Fogopengy 2015-03-11 20:41:48
is it possible to be deferred on the early decisionapplication to the regular decision?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:41:50
Yes, that’s a possibility (but we try to use it sparingly).
blep 2015-03-11 20:43:27
I did not unerstand what that meant.
yas 2015-03-11 20:43:27
Why would one be deferred?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:43:28
In early admissions, we make decisions of “admitted” and “not admitted” for almost all the applicants, but we hold onto some more borderline candidates (“defer”) and make a decision when we see the whole pool.
Niuniu01 2015-03-11 20:43:32
13/TX How many 7th graders apply?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:43:41
Not very many; most applicants are in high school.
blippy1998 2015-03-11 20:43:50
Michael/16/IL What if the person who I think is best to write my math recommendation is also the best for my personal one?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:44:12
Then definitely have that person write a letter! (And pick a second writer as well, for either category.)
yas 2015-03-11 20:44:47
I'm finishing my first Pre-calc course this year. Is it helpful for Mathcamp?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:44:55
Yes! That's a good thing to do before applying to Mathcamp.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:45:02
Okay! Thanks for all the great questions about the application process.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:45:10
The field is open for any questions about Mathcamp, and we’ll wrap up at 9pm ET.
raxu 2015-03-11 20:45:18
Will knowing/not knowing calculus affect my experience at camp by a good amount?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:45:32
Actually, no: most classes don't require Calculus as a prerequisite.
Saraswati Devi 2015-03-11 20:45:35
14/VA If i have skipped a grade, will there be any restrictions on admission? (I will be taking multivar calc next year)
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:45:42
No, that's fairly common for Mathcamp students.
DragonTamer 2015-03-11 20:45:50
How often does someone get a room to themselves?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:46:02
That's fairly uncommon (but we have a few singles each year).
goveganddomath 2015-03-11 20:46:04
Will knowledge of vector calculus open up further course opportunities?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:46:07
A little bit, yes!
panda7777777 2015-03-11 20:46:11
Badam Bertelli / 10 / MA do you get feedback for your solutions
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:46:28
Unfortunately, we don't have the grading-power to do this -- too many applicants, too few graders.
Rotack00 2015-03-11 20:46:45
Can you still do the MathCamp quiz, even after you have been admitted AND went to math camp?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:46:48
For fun? Sure!
pad 2015-03-11 20:47:02
mathcamp is annual, right? Is mathcamp a good AMC12/AIME/USAMO preparer?
stickman1668 2015-03-11 20:47:02
Are most campers AIME/USAMO qualifiers?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:47:45
Some campers are really into contests, and take problem-solving classes at Mathcamp and do our weekly team problem competitions. It's a good way to get better at problem-solving. Other campers have never taken a contest before and don't plan to start.
goveganddomath 2015-03-11 20:47:49
Do you look at regional and state contests and USAMTS for admission, in addition to AMC/AIME? I am not great at AMC
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:47:57
We look at everything!
blep 2015-03-11 20:48:03
Would professors/instructors be available during down time to answer questions? Would they go over the questions on the application quiz at the beginning of the first lesson or something? Or would we have to ask on our free time?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:48:28
Instructors at Mathcamp are around all the time, and people are always happy to talk about math.
ShadowQueenPeach 2015-03-11 20:48:46
William/15/OR: About what time do students end up sleeping at Mathcamp?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:49:10
I think most students go to sleep between 10 and midnight. But there's no official lights out, just official quiet hour.
stickman1668 2015-03-11 20:49:14
Are there any chemistry related research projects available?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:49:42
If you're interested in a chemistry-related project, I'm sure we'll find someone who wants to work on it with you!
Niuniu01 2015-03-11 20:49:53
What about Physics?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:49:57
That, too!
goveganddomath 2015-03-11 20:50:05
But you can pair roommates with similar bedtime desires, such that if you wanted to sleep the noise would be minimal, right?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:50:16
Exactly, yes. That's why we ask people about their evening preferences.
Fogopengy 2015-03-11 20:50:19
are research projects optional or mandatory?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:50:27
Like everything else at Mathcamp: optional.
blep 2015-03-11 20:50:34
What about CS?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:50:37
There's lots of CS.
DragonTamer 2015-03-11 20:50:40
What kind of food variety is there?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:50:44
There's lots of food.
DragonTamer 2015-03-11 20:51:30
Is there chocolate?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:51:38
Sometimes!
K2apsjy 2015-03-11 20:52:01
When did Math Camp start?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:52:24
We started officially with two students in 1993, but it took a couple years for Mathcamp to become Mathcamp. The program has looked like this since about 1997.
15Pandabears 2015-03-11 20:52:30
How does mathcamp compare PROMYS and Ross?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:52:56
Well, PROMYS and Ross are both number theory-focused programs; Mathcamp offers number theory classes, but lots of other things, too.
carjacker 2015-03-11 20:53:09
how many teachers do you have ?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:53:25
It's about 30 staff members: 8 college students, 10-12 grad students, 8-10 postdocs / professors / professionals, and 1 camp nurse, plus a rotating cast of guest speakers.
Guendabiaani 2015-03-11 20:53:30
Adam Bertelli/14/CT: Do I still have a chance to get in if I start the test today?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:53:32
yes
Niuniu01 2015-03-11 20:53:47
13/TX What do we do in our "Evening Activities?"
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:54:24
Oh, boy -- anything you want! Strategy board games, singing, chess, making giant bubbles out of hula hoops...
SunnyHe 2015-03-11 20:54:31
Will there be Chess?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:54:32
Yes!
stickman1668 2015-03-11 20:54:45
When do you start accepting applications or release the qualifying quiz?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:54:51
the quiz is out now
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:55:03
and you can submit your application now as well
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:55:16
(for future years, the quiz usually comes out in january)
carjacker 2015-03-11 20:55:29
If the math camp is so flexible, how many staff members do you have? Can they really give me attention and help me out?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:55:48
You definitely interact with the staff! It's a 4:1 ratio.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:56:23
Specifically, you'll have an academic advisor to help you craft your summer mathematically (choosing courses, planning your schedule) and a residential advisor on your hall who looks out for your well-being.
Niuniu01 2015-03-11 20:56:55
May we bring electronics?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:56:57
Yes.
Fogopengy 2015-03-11 20:56:59
What happens during the Colloquium time? What is the difference between it and regular classes?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:57:40
Colloquium is a lecture that doesn't have other classes scheduled at the same time. It's often given by a guest speaker, either on math or on a related science.
carjacker 2015-03-11 20:57:43
how is security at the camp?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:57:48
It's a very safe campus.
rogert 2015-03-11 20:57:53
For students from overseas, how do you help them to overcome culture differences?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:58:11
Great question. Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, so everybody is adjusting!
cedarwax 2015-03-11 20:58:18
Do we have breaks?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:58:27
Yes! Your schedule is up to you, and we encourage breaks.
Fogopengy 2015-03-11 20:58:28
How many classes should one take?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:58:46
Totally up to you, but most students take about 3 classes per week (each of which meets an hour per day).
beanielove2 2015-03-11 20:58:48
What is the full financial aid? Not just for $60,000 income.
Niuniu01 2015-03-11 20:58:48
About when do we have to wake up?
Gravity 2015-03-11 20:58:50
We'll look at your family's circumstances. Many people can pay something, but not all. If you earn more than $60,000 it moves up on a sliding scale
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:59:03
@Niuniu01: Breakfast usually ends at 9am.
MiraBernstein 2015-03-11 20:59:06
It actually costs more to run Mathcamp than what we charge you: we have to pay for lodging, food, salaries for teachers... We get donations to cover the rest. But if you need financial assistance, you can get it!
DragonTamer 2015-03-11 20:59:23
Is there a special container for hula hoop bubbles?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:59:28
A kiddie-pool.
MiraBernstein 2015-03-11 20:59:37
No, but you can make one for us
raxu 2015-03-11 20:59:44
What does "reflect on the math" mean exactly?
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:59:49
This is a great question to end with:
MarisaD 2015-03-11 20:59:58
math is something you learn by doing, rather than by watching,
MarisaD 2015-03-11 21:00:26
so at TAU ("time, academic, unscheduled"), you get to spend some time reflecting on the math you've seen in class: thinking about it, talking about it, working with fellow students and with your instructors.
MarisaD 2015-03-11 21:00:53
Okay, everybody - thanks for all of the great questions!
MarisaD 2015-03-11 21:01:10
